Like I said we handload our bullets and like I said before I have shot to 300 yards and it is on so what is the problem?

In a nut shell, x.x high induces error and makes the "system" less precise. 100%. It boils down to what type of shooter are you. If you just want to be "close", then sight it in where you want to (or think you want to) x.x high. In the world of precision shooting, you must have a proper zero. This is the difference between just shooting, and shooting to be precise. I am a precise shooter (with every rifle I own), and I want to minimize as much error into my shooting as possible. You can not accomplish this unless you have a proper zero.

Like I said we handload our bullets and like I said before I have shot to 300 yards and it is on so what is the problem? As I said in that other linked thread, there is no problem as long as you know what your bullet is doing at various distances regarding the MPBR. I've had 7mags zero'ed 3" high at 100 yds, shooting 160 partitions (lately accubonds), and verify hits at 100, 150,200,250,300, and 350 yds. It has worked well for me since 1971. It is really very simple, as you say Aggieman. I've killed/culled around 200 big game animals with this exact setup.

I like mine dead on at 100 these days, that way if I want to shoot something in the neck, head, etc at feeder range I just aim and squeeze. I don't really shoot much past that but if I do it is generally shoulder shot. Dead center hold in the shoulder has nice margin and room for error. Rarely do I shoot past 200, If I do just hold a little higher toward the back line.
Shoot. Eat. Repeat.

Tikka .308 we hand load our bullets Depending on bbl length & .308 ammo, 3" high @ 100 could be as bad as up to 9" low @ 300yds. And that's if you can make -0- MOA shots. A 12" gap isn't "guesswork"? Your gun & your choice. I prefer to know where my bullet is going to hit, not where I think it's going to hit. Now if you've shot @ 100, 150,200, 250, 300yds & know where it'll hit, that's different. I have shot it at 300 so I do know where it's going to hit How low was it @ 300?

On my place I can shoot to 200 yds. Thats the furthets distance I have a straight line of sight. The feeder sits at 120 yds. I sight my wifes 243 24" barrel shooting 95 gr SST hand loads an inch high at 100 yds and my 308 24" barrel shooting 150 gr SP 1 1/2 high at 100yds. Point of aim point of impact. We don't adjust for elevation, we hold dead on and we shoot deer behind he shoulder. The vitals on a braod side deer are roughly 12" or like I tell my wife, "The size of a basketball." Weather the bullet impacts 1 1/2 high or low of aim point it dosen't matter, it's still a kill shot. I don't have a 200 yd range in my area to sight in at so this is the method I use.

When hunting the national forest I will rarely get a shot over 100 yards so I keep my AR dialed in at 50 yards and that seems to put me at 1.5 inches high at 100 yards.
On my bolt action rifle I just keep it dialed in at 100 since 200 yards is the longest shot I am comfortable with taking on anything except a pig.

I sight em in at 200. With the calibers i shoot (2800 to 3000fps), they'll be down 7" at 300 and 20" at 400. Been doing it that way for decades. I hold over to about 300 and use the turret beyond that. Not saying it's the best way, but it works for me. Sometimes there just isn't much time to make the shot. And, to be honest, I've been doing it like that, successfully, for so long that I just can't see reason to change. And, that's for deer, pigs, and coyotes. Precision to the inch isn't needed. No target shooter would do it like I do. They love those turrets. And they might have starved to death back when turrets weren't an option. But I'd have given em some venison.
