Have fun and take lots of pics. Warning hunting elk in those mountains can be addictive.

A lot of private land up in that corner of the state, supposed to be some of the best bulls and bucks because of it.

From the guys around Dolores right now, it has been warm and wet. Hope third season is better for you. I am out of the country for work and missed the DIY hunt that I did last year and several guys are doing right now. I am heading home today or tomorrow and thinking about grabbing my gun and tent and heading up for third season. Not sure where I would go yet and it will depend on several things falling into place. Those that are going, good luck!

Well I won't be making it back from Israel until the evening of the 3rd, I may try to jump in the truck and head up, but looks like pretty short notice. We will see.

Just got back from 75 and 751 Elk hunting. It was hot and dry. record highs, only saw 2 herds of elk in the dark timber at the 9,500 ft elevation level. Heard me coming a mile away. waning Full moon did not help, lots of tracks heading down to private land. Did not see anyone on the mountain with a kill. All the guides were hiigh for 11 days and did not see anything.
You need weather or hunt water.

You need weather or hunt water. Same deal with me, plus add atrocious winds If there is a positive, there should be many bulls go through another year as the outfitters I know up there are having the same issues, even on Private land.

Just got back from 2nd west of Delores. The area they call the glade has had the deer head into the Delores river canyon. At least this according to the game wardens we spoke with. Our group tried 3 basic tactics; 1) sit on water. Works except they kept coming in at near dark making it difficult to separate bulls from cows from spikes. 2) drive the roads like the locals do. This actually worked for one of our group. Someone in one of the draws pushed 8 head out. One was a 5x5 that just HAD to stop and look back. 3) find where they're bedding and get there before daylight and wait. This one worked for me. Spotted mine at 667 yards and moved over on the ledge enough that I shot him at 137 yards. The pack out of that canyon wasn't made for a 50-something year old man. Here's a couple of pics. Note the angle of the draw I was in. Made a new friend while I was up there as well. She turned 3 last Saturday. Her name is Daisy! Here's a better view of what we had to climb to pack my elk out. Again, according to the GW, the elk are either very high or very low. They are responding to the hunting pressure by finding either dark timber or very rough areas. From what they were telling us, once they've been pushed a time or two, they head for the tough areas. Good luck to everyone heading out for 3rd and 4th in Colorado.

Congrats. Well earned bull sir and a life long friend. Love it! \ X's 2, the Glade is well known with the locals, animals can get to the Delores drainage, or S towards private lands, a bit further West, and there is often bean stubble left in fields they will go through. Congrats on a good hunt.
