Looks like he spent a while getting out of that fence!

Looks like his bottom jaw is wired shut in the first photo. If you can't dart him and remove it, then put him out of his misery.

Poor guy. I'm guessing it's the barbed wire, not CWD. He will most likely be coyote food soon.

Contacted the warden and he said it looks like he got caught in a snare or fence. He says to find him and take him out of his misery and then call him so he can come out and inspect the carcass. I'd say our chances of finding him are pretty small, but if we do, I'll take some pics and also tell you what the warden's comments are.

Good move. What did the warden say about tagging him or not?

The warden said to put the buck down, leave him where he lies, and call him (the warden) to come out and inspect the body. Any decision on tagging him will, I guess, be made at that point. The warden may just want to take him back to the station for his fellow workers to take a look at. Even if we need to tag him that's sure OK. Between me and my extended family, we've got more than enough deer tags to fill all our freezers and supply Hunters for the Hungry as well!

So the warden gave you permission to shoot that deer with a rifle at anytime? Like tomorrow or maybe in March? (not that he is going to make it that long)

So the warden gave you permission to shoot that deer with a rifle at anytime? Like tomorrow or maybe in March? (not that he is going to make it that long) The warden urged us to find him and put him down as soon as possible to end his suffering. He didn't say what means we should employ to put him down, nor did he give us any direction on "time" other than "as soon as we can find him." What, exactly, is your point?

Maybe, just maybe the GW doesn't know for sure the wire is the sole cause of the the deer's poor body condition. Perhaps he'd like to take some samples for testing, just to make sure the deer was otherwise healthy. I'm pretty sure a GW has the discretion to authorize the humane removal of any native game animal in the state in such condition, regardless of season.

I'd get something in writing(text/email) from him before I proceeded. People do forget what they've said from time to time.

I wouldn't. I'd take the man at his word, go find the deer, and put him down.

If you take a wildlife officials word, you might shoot it and then get labeled as a poacher in on-line forums. I suppose we are just lucky it will be taken by an in-state hunter and it's not a sheep. Sure hope this deer's suffering ends soon.

Glad to hear the warden said to take care of it. Figured government over reach would have said to wait until rifle season and burn one of your tags should you feel the need.

I would already done what needed to be done. I would not have gotten anyone else involved to make things harder than needed.

That's a hard thing to see. I'm glad the GW is working with you.

He showed up again on the game camera yesterday. I was able to zoom in and it appears that the poor animal has other issues. The "wire" I thought I could see has gone, but look at the area forward of his ear and just back and above his eye. Note, too, the marks on his shoulder/neck area. Looks almost like he took a load of buck shot. I spent 3 hours looking for him today, and will search some more tomorrow. And I will put him down if I see him and deal with the GW when he shows up to examine the animal. This is tragic.

From the looks of that picture I would guess those areas are from the barbwire he had on previously. My guess for his condition is he got entangled in the wire fencing and could not escape from it for a while. Causing him to loose weight. Having that barbwire around his head/antlers was an issue as it was always catching on brush/trees/weeds/grass as he walker or ran through it. With that barbwire always catching things he was always fighting to get free from it causing the wounds and scars. I also will add any buck at this time of the year that is entangled and in a vulnerable position will have other bucks trying kill him or fight him. Seen a few times on bucks with locked antlers. What we don't know is how much barbwire or how long of piece was connect to him. The longer the piece of wire the more it got caught on. If he was constantly fighting being tangle up in his surrounding he was not eating or drinking very much. Not real sure about his age either. For me I would let nature take its course due to the fact the deer no longer has the barbwire to deal with and is eating at a feeder, not laying in a cool spot or at water waiting to die. I think he his on the road to a recovery since he is eating IMO.
