So what is worse? Hunting with a 223 in a LF or with a 30-06 in a HF?

Will a 223 kill a deer? Yes but there are simply better choices. Very insightful.

I have seen more deer having to be tracked after having been shot with large caliber rifles than with small. The reason. Those people were either scared of the recoil or had real bad cases of buck fever. The older hunters after hunting for a long time no longer got the fever and being older and wiser no longer liked getting the hell kicked out of their shoulders with big guns. Also they practiced more shooting a smaller caliber gun as it was more pleasant to shoot. That's my opinion and I am sticking with it. A fellow at the lease next door had everyone out trying to find his deer last year, he finally called in a guy with a dog to find the deer. The dog handler said that 300 and 7mm mags were the most tracked calibers between him and his blood dog buddies. He believed the calibers made for irresponsible hunters that thought they could kill anything with the pull of the trigger with there big bad gun. And that all technique was gone along with the fear of recoil causing additional error. The deer was found, gut shot with a 270. One guy went on to explain that the bigger guns were more effective at a longer range because the bullet was pushing through the animal up close, and most of the energy was being expelled into a tree or into the ground, not the animal. I do not know the ballistics behind that, but I did hear a military sniper say that his gun killed better at 300+ yards, might be the same idea.

My favorite is still the 30-30. The Hordany LEVERevolution makes it a nice 200yd gun.
To be determined

Just make sure you can place the shot in the right place. I've seen countless video on YouTube of hunters shooting deer with bazookas and the deer still ran off because they got it in the wrong place.

If you can put the .223 bullet in a deer's neck or head then you're good to go.

People keep saying 223 make sure you can put it in the right spot! No matter what you are shooting, if you can't put it in the right spot, then practice more! If you think 60 grains more of lead, is gonna make up for being a poor shot, your wrong! IMO
