haha! Too funny. Grew up in Wichita Falls and passed that place many a time. I will be driving by it Tuesday. I would never stay there. bolt

I stay at the hotel on 287 south of town now, but back 20 years ago, the Hillside was the only game in town. I was young, and the room was about $35 / night. Got to be very good friends with hotel mgr. I miss those days!

Yep. Stayed at the Hillside for about 18 quail seasons. Started in 86 for $19.00 a night. Became very good friends with Mr. Joe and several guys that hunted out that way. Really miss those days and meeting the guys every fall. Met some really good folks in that area. Dropped by couple of years back, big difference. Wouldn't leave my equipment there now. Do you remember the C-Bart?

Yes, ate lunch at C-T many days. I think there is a car dealership where it used to be. Also knew Joe very well. Not sure if you know, but he was hit by a car and killed while delivering papers early one morning. I have some funny stories on him. We used to take him with us to McBrides in Wichita Falls occasionally for Saturday night dinner. I was there one April turkey hunting and a strong wind blew the entire west roof into the driveway between the rooms. BTW, I've cleaned lots of birds in that first room to the right!😄

One more small thing I learned about young pointers the hard way is to never whoa one while it in pointing or backing. The pointing and backing is instinctive. The pup goes into a trance while pointing. Any command can break the spell and they may start stepping. This is just my theory but I've seen it happen. Zip your lip when a pup is pointing.

Quail hunting is like walking into, and out of a beautiful painting all day long. Gene Hill

Amen! Mr. Oxner.

It gets hilarious to watch sometimes! A dog is stacked up like a courtyard cannon on birds and their owners are sprinting like He77 to the dog screaming whoa-whoa-whoa!!!!! What moved? I got into this situation with a hunter last year on my lease and I finally had to have a terse discussion with him. It went something like this: "shut up or go home"!
