If this needs to be moved to the exotics section, please let me know. Was curious if anyone has any recommendations on feed or types of terrain to hunt axis deer in Gillespie County. I'm hunting pretty much between Fredricksburg/Kerrville and have yet to see one come out. I know we have them on the ranch, owner has gotten a few and one guy has them on cam. I think they are hanging out near the water source but can't confirm it. We have a couple flat clearings with oats, and hilly areas with good cedar cover and a few areas that have scattered oaks. So any advice is greatly appreciated, as I would love to get one in the near future. I understand the best times to get them are spring or summer, just trying to get a plan together so I can be prepared.
Thanks in advance.

Any water on the property? They love creeks. Try alfalfa hay.

There's a couple tanks on the ranch and a trough. I figured they would be in those areas as well. I will see if I can set up cameras at a few spots and see what happens.

You're certainly in the right area for Axis, Gillespie county has a bunch of Axis. Good Luck

Put some horse&mule sweet feed I've heard this from a friend of mine. Haven't tried it yet though. I have more axis every year seems like, but the big boys still try hard to stay out of sight.

Creek runner do you normally see them out in the open or in the thick cedars? I have heard they are hard to pattern but just trying to get an idea of what types of terrain they seem to favor.

I cut all the cedar off of my place. In the summer they're pretty reliable late-morning/mid-day to bed down or feed on a small ridge right in front of the cabin, overlooking a field. If the wind's right, I can creep out there and pop one. I've only stumbled into one good buck, the rest were rat bucks and does.

We use sweet feed certain times of the year as well. Works great!

The ones at our place in Kimble County stick to the creek bottoms for the most part. Chaffhaye usually gets their attention.
Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.

All the above is correct and good info.
If you have them only occasionally on cam, try putting out some ripe mangoes (off the ground) near your feeder. They have a natural instinct for them. You can cut a small slit to release aroma.
But keep them off the ground cuz hogs love them too - and axis and hogs don't mix.

I don't do it often anymore because the axis i hunt already pattern to my feeders / alfalfa, but when I want to draw them off the neighbor's alfalfa ..... I give them a little treat

Axis can be tough to hunt. More skittish than a whitetail and harder to see than a ghost. At least that's been my experience so far.

When you can really figure out an Axis pattern please let me know. Around here if they are around you will see them. If not you won't. There may be 30 one day and then go a month or more and not see one. And if you do see one you want you better shoot it because you may never see it again.
