Will a Tikka T3 stabilize an SST 154gr well enough inside 200 yards for it to be worth the time to load these? Found these at Academy today & being on clearance, they were 25% off the already discounted price.. Think they rang up around $14/box.. Figured if nothing else I might be able to pop a few pigs with them..
I really hate to do what I am about to do, because it will be very painful for you.

It's got a 1:9 twist. It'll stabilize those terrifically, all the way up to 168 gr. bullets.
Excellent bullet you have there, and that's not a heavy load.

You bet!
Same rifle, same bullet I've ran out to 800 yards on a hand load. Killing machine, too.

You got a good deal on them that's for sure.
I loaded them for my dads 280 for a few years. Not impressed with them at all. Several cleanly shot deer had bullet fragments wind up in the guts. They are a pretty soft bullet, if you hit the shoulder they will probably come unglued.

Mid range load of H-4831, If memory serves me, which sometimes it doesn't, 2700 fps or so per load data... I don't have a chronograph. Had very similar results out of the 150's in my 270 win. I started loading them for me my brother and dad and there was a revolt.

So you were running them at 7-08 speed, and they still fragmented. Interesting.

It is a 700 mountain rifle that my dad shoots. A very light gun he isn't as young as he used to be and prefers them on the tamer side.
I'm trying to talk him into letting me load him some different ammo with lighter bullets but he is happy with the 150 NP's he is shooting and hard headed.
Ill make no bones about it I consider the old style hornady interlock bullest pos's because of those experiences. Also had similar results with the 220's out of my 300 wby, but I have also read those were designed for 3006 and not meant for 2900 fps.
The new eldx's the interlock ring has moved to the mid section of the bullet, I like that design a lot more and will probably give them a go at some point. 99.9% of my shooting is hunting done at 150 yards or less. As critical as you are of BC I am of on game performance. Never lost an animal with them, but they did things I did not care for once they reached their mark.

Think I've got some 270's in this boolit I picked on the cheap somewhere...sounds like they are a better practice bullets though. I've got all winter to punch paper this year, and really need the trigger time anyway...so these'll get shot up 1st now that I've got a new 270 & scope rig to wring the bugs out of. Ron

You gotta analyze performance and decide what to do from there. If they showed you negative results, then it makes perfect sense for a guy to quit using them.

I hate SST's out of anything at or above 3000 fps impact velocity. Those 7-08 rounds should be ok, but I'd stay off of bone if I could help it. I've see gruesome stuff outa SST's and 7mags.

I'd have to agree. I might even move the fps down a 100 or 2. Tried them in 300 WM with devastating results. TOO devastating. Lost an entire shoulder on a hill-country doe at just over 200 yards. Next, I tried them in a 30-06 with the same results. Relegated them to paper-punching. No worries about losing meat there, or, banging steel. I've got some in 6.5 that I'll load to pop steel this winter. Keep the velocity low and you should be ok, just keep them off of the shoulder bones.

If they're accurate enough inside 200, I may just use them for head shots on pigs & call it good.. Appreciate everyones feedback..
