I am looking at buying some Dakota flocked decoys. I want to get a dozen or two. Two questions for you guys.
1. Do any of you use them and how would you "review" them? 2. How do you "handle" them. Do you keep them in bags or do you Texas rig them and carry them bunched together?
I do a lot of public hunting out of a boat and take 2-3 dozen with me. So, I prefer Texas rigged and thrown in the boat. But I would think that the flocked portion of the decoy wouldn't last.
Right now looking at swimmers. But will be looking at some standing to add to certain hunts when we are near a bank or goose hunting, etc. So, any feedback on those would be helpful too.
Appreciate any feedback!

ducks see a silhouette from a distance, that is why you want to use x-large decoys, so they can be seen from far away. By the time the duck is 20 yards away and can notice that it is a flocked decoy , he is already shot. You want 6-8 feet between each decoy, with the decoys in a line,,, not grouped in a bunch.

The flocking on the Dakotas actually holds up pretty well. That said, for the price its worth getting a cheap slotted bag. Just order them from Rogers and you get a slotted bag anyway.
As for fullbodies, I would look at GHG. I am a big believer in movement for your fullbodies, and nothing moves in a breese better than GHG. It takes a tornado to get any movement out of any other brand.

So, I have a few dozen GHG decoys that are worn down. Been looking at do it yourself flocking and appears pretty easy. Just time, but I would enjoy the hobby and I take more pride in coming home with a stack of ducks from do it yourself projects. I may try my hand before dropping a butt load of money. Or I may mix them.
Anyone try the do it your self route? Recommendations or links to how-to's?

From what I have been reading, they notice the flocked better from a distance and it helps reduce glare which is the key piece I am going for. I agree that the size matters. I'll let you know if I see a difference in finish while using them. Thanks for the feedback!

I Texas rig my decoys but store them in slot bags. Still 1000 times better than wrapping decoy line. I just drop the weight in the bag first then the decoy.

I can mostly drive up to where I plan to go, but have been in situations where I have to walk in. Do you just grab the bags and go?

Yeah I usually just grab a bag and use less decoys. This is for decoys that I have carved though and have tons of hours in. For decoys I bought I might take them out and sling em over my shoulder.
Flocked blacks show up from a distance WAY better than any painted blacks as to the other discussion...

Thanks Dave. I have an opportunity to buy some at a great discount. I have looked into DYI flocking on some old decoys. Gonna try that too.
Thanks for all the advice guys!

I would take a look at Higdon mallards if your in the market. I would suggest slot bags and texas rigs. If you going to spend that kind of money on decoys might as well spend a few extra minutes during pick up to put them in slotted bags.
