99% of surviving the worst day of your life, is being mentally prepared.

Having faced the worst day of my life a couple of times, I'll go even further and say that you should not only be mentally prepared but well trained and well equipped.

Want to take a Tom Givens class.. Done several classes out at KRTraining and Karl and John speak very highly of Tom's classes and take them themselves.
Most of us here probably grew up shooting guns and are at least decent with a handgun. These classes will humble you and the saying "you don't know what you don't know" couldn't be truer when it comes to defensive use of a gun.

I've taken a class from Tom and his main partner who's name I don't recall right now. They push for being ready to handle any possible situation. They sometimes lose sight of the fact that, each step you take in being trained, makes you that much more likely to survive. They tend to forget that, by being a competent shot, having the proper mindset and employing sound basic tactics, your already way ahead of the curve. Their training will definitely make you better, even if you don't achieve the level, they say you should be at.

I attended Massad Ayoob's Lethal Force Institute in Florida in 2005. Not only did we learn and hone our skills, but he taught us what to expect AFTER a confrontation. And I have to tell you that I do not want to deal with it. Will I use my weapon to defend myself and my family? Absolutely ..... without hesitation and with extreme vigilance. But the fallout from a shooting is a nightmare for sure. You need to know how to keep your mouth shut, how to answer questions, how to respond to the initial LEO contact ........ Whew. It gets really intense just remembering the things that we were told.
. There's a fine line between BRAVE ... and STUPID.
The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why.

That was covered, know who your attorney will be, shut up, ask for your attorney by name, wait two sleep cycles to be interviewed, that was just the beginning. The classroom experience was more important than the skills portion which was also very good.

If you get the opportunity - take a Force on Force class. It will really up your skill level. I had taken several CQB/pistol classes in the past (Foreign Service) but none of them really prepared me for the reality of a gunfight. I wish I had this class years ago. Warning: take a day off after this class. You will come home battered, bruised, and need some rest.

If you don't have a local school, you need to check out each traveling instructors calendar, to see whenever they might be close enough. Tom's going to be in Beaumont this weekend and Ohio in a couple of weeks. I traveled from MN to MI to take my class.
