How old before you'll put an E-collar on your dog for simple obedience and field training? Power settings for the first time?
Thanks!

I always introduced it after six months old for whoa training, but I've seen it on pups much younger for the invisible fence.

It depends on how hard of hearing they are.

I don't ever stick to a certain "age". I always make sure my pups are performing the commands (that I am going to reinforce) at least 8-9 times out of ten in a controlled situation (on a CC, yard, etc). Then when the collar is introduced, they have a real good idea of what the "bump" is all about and it shouldn't take much of a level to get them to respond. Don't just strap a collar on a pup at 6 months because someone tells you to and expect it to teach a dog command that he hasn't been exposed to through numerous reps.

You have to judge the pup's maturity level...drive, tenacity, brain power, etc. I probably wait longer than some others, but I wait until they are 10-12 months old, sometimes beyond. At this age, they seem to take it a little better without getting their feelings hurt so to speak. I would not be in a rush just to say I introduced them to an e-collar at an early age if you are working on other drills manually with them.

Like others have said, no rush. The collar is an extension of the check cord. The dog needs to understand what the correction is for. Not saying you would but I have sen people put a collar on and then give a dog a command it has not fully learned prior. We had a natural gas fireplace with a glass front when my son was little. We were always telling to get away from it because it was hot. We would get really excited when he would get close and say loudly to get away from there, that is hot and you will get burned. He had no idea what hot meant. All he knew was when he would close we would get excited and he would move on knowing we would shut up when he walked away. Well, one day he walked right up to it and put his hand right on the glass and got a nasty burn. Ta da! He now knew what hot meant. You could tell him an ice cube was hot and you couldn't get him near it. My point being age does not matter as much as how well the previous training has progressed and the dog understands what corrections will be for

As soon as a pup knows come here an e collar on the lowest setting will help its hearing. Never shock a dog you cannot see or when you are mad.

In my opinion which isn't worth much, a dog has to know what you want it to do before you shock it, if he doesn't know what you want him to do and you shock him alls you may gain is collar burning the dog or making him stop whatever he's doing and become confused. With that said i don't put an age on them more of what level are they at. Never collared a dog less than atleast 6 months old that had already had some training (voice commands, like come ect....) start off on lowest setting and work from there, different dogs take different amount of shock to correct, if a dog yelps or has unusually body movement you've hit him or her too hard unless they're in a life or death situation (the highway or somthing to that degree) that's too much. Spend time with your dog and learn his movements and tech him commands in a controlled environment and take it from there. If you know your dog and start off at a low setting and up it from there you will be just fine. In my "opinion"
