Just picked up a Montana Rifle Co M1999 X2 in 28 Nosler. I'm not planning on reloading for it just yet as I have a lot of factory ammo that came with it but was curious what experiences everyone has had with them so far and with what loads/bullets? Eventually I'm hoping to build a 180gr VLD or 175gr ELD-X load for it once I have plenty of once fired brass. This rifle will be my primary rifle for my South Africa Safari in July.

Awesome round and a great rifle company. Hope you get decent bbl life from reports I've heard its a burner.

I'll load pics tonight.
I'm hearing 1000 rds or so barrel life. I'm not planning on banging steel with this one other than to prep for a hunt. This will be a hunting rifle so I'm hoping that will extend the life.

We have built several 28 Nosler's, and I have shot and dialed in several. I have had great accuracy results with the bullets we have tried- 180 VLD, 195 Hybrid, 175 ELD-X.
Barrel life, if you get 800 rounds, I'd say that's good. The 26 Nosler was yielding about 400-500 rounds. The 28 will yield a little more, but not much. Shoot it slow. But, that's why they make extra barrels!

Of course it burns barrels. That's what hot rod rounds do, and that's why they make new barrels every day. It's worth every penny.

The twist on mine is 9.5...think it'll handle the 180 VLD if shot above 3100fps?

The twist on mine is 9.5...think it'll handle the 180 VLD if shot above 3100fps? It will be close but not optimum according to Bergers twist rate calculator http://www.bergerbullets.com/twist-rate-calculator/

Yeah I've seen that. I was curious if anyone has shot them in a 9.5.

Might have to stick with a 168VLD or maybe a 175 ELD-X when the time comes.

Shot my 28 Nosler today along with a buddies just finished Horizon 28 with a Proof Research barrel. Took both to 1650 yards mine using the 195gr and his the 175grELDx.

That's sick! The twist rate is the one thing I wish was different on mine. Mines a 9.5. I got 12 boxes of nosler Ammo with it, 160AB, and I'll shoot that a while then reload some but sounds like a 175 is the high end of what that twist will handle.

11.8 Mils to get 1650 yards ... Not too shabby

Chad, what were the velocities with those bullets and what twist is needed for the 195? The 180's I'm pushing at 3150 fps, and the 195's at 3050. The 195 can be pushed faster, but the groups open up some at the higher speeds. I have shot the 195's in a 7 Mag with 9" twist barrel. At 100 yards when zeroing, they shot fine. But when I went to 200 yards, the bullets were key holing and all over the page. They weren't fully sideways, but they were going in partially sideways, and about a 2 foot group. So, I'd recommend atleast a 8.5" twist. I am building a 7mm/300 WM now, and will be using an 8" twist barrel. It should do fine. The first 7/300 WM rifle Tony built a few weeks ago is running a modest 3020 fps with a light load of Retumbo with the 195's. I think 3050 fps is no problem in a 7/300WM.

Thanks Chad! Sounds like I'll be sticking with 168 VLDs or 175 ELD-X when I start reloading for this rifle. Need to shoot a decent amount of the factory rounds first before reloading though. No need to burn the barrel with load development yet!

The factory ammo will be questionable. It always is with a large case volume and small opening to get a large amount of powder down it when loading. The factory ammo will have a large powder spread inside the case with this large of a case and small opening to get the powder in with how the factory loads it.
Why buy multiple boxes of ammo to see if it will like it, vs. buy a set of test loads from me and KNOW that it will like one of these loads! I can do 5 groups of 4 rounds each (20 rounds) and you can see what the gun likes. It will be much more consistent ammo than the factory fodder.

Well part of the trade package was 12 boxes of ammo and 20 once fired brass from barrel break in. The guy I got it from said it shout 1.5" at 200 yds without much problem. If it shoots that well, I'll shoot factory for a while before spending time and barrel life reloading. I will reload for it eventually though.
