I load some ammo for my brothers 45-70. We are shooting 405 grain hard cast slugs now, not sure of the velocity, but its pretty brutal on both ends. Going to tame it down a notch or two for next batch of ammo!!!

Indeed!
Recoil is akin to a 20 gauge high velocity slug....not too bad! In Ohio, we are allowed only straight walled cartridges.

If knockdown power is what you're after, Try the .50 BMG loaded with 750 gr. Hornady A-max. You will throw rocks at the 45-70.
Harley Davidson Motorcycles.....the most efficent way to convert gasoline into noise, without the side effects of Horsepower.

I typically use a 405 gr. softpoint (Remington bulk 405 gr.) in my .458 SOCOM for hogs, but I also have some 525 gr. 'piledrivers' loaded that I use on occasion. They actually weigh 540 grs. with the gas check. https://beartoothbullets.com/open_sight/archive_open_sight.htm/21You could push them faster in the 45/70 than I can in my SOCOM, but my purpose is to use them 'subsonic' anyway. I've found nothing (yet) that beats them for penetration. Of course, the trajectory (after 100 yds.) is like a marble falling off a table, but for shots under 150 yds. the 405 gr. softpoint or the 525 hardcast both are hard hitters. I've recovered some of the 405 gr. from larger hogs, but have never recovered one of the piledrivers. I'm not sure where/when they stop. I think when they reach 'Magma'.

I'm chopping down a 45/70 Marlin SBL to 13" and putting a silencerco hybrid on it with an IR laser
