I am looking to get my wife a new shotgun for this season. This gun will be for dove and sporting clay. She is 5'3 and very petite. She complained last year about the recoil of the 12 gauge. So what is yalls advice on a good 20 gauge that won't break the bank. Thanks

Mossberg 500 or remington 870.
In my experience. The cheapest Mossberg's are nicer than the cheapest Remington's.

If your wife is recoil shy you should look for a gas operated semiautomatic shotgun for her. You want her to remember the time in the field and not how hard the shotgun kicked so I would stay away from pump, O/U, SxS and recoil operated guns.
Depending on your "not break the bank" budget you may be able to a new one, If not there are a lot of quality used shotguns sitting on the shelves of gun stores.

Mine either shoots a 12g 11-87 or a Spanish SxS 20.
Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.

Mine just took over my Beretta Extrema 12g. I am now in the market for something else because a Mossberg 835 isn't going to cut it after getting use to that Beretta

Let her shoot a 20 before you invest in one. They are lighter and some of them kick as hard as a 12. A youth 12 with kick pad may be lighter recoil. Especially with light loads like Winchester or Rio.
Mine shoots a Browning gold but she is kind of hard headed.

Find her a 20ga semi like the rem 1100 and get her some light loads. She would probably do just as well with the 1100 in 12ga
They make some stocks for the 1100 that make it really soft but you could just get a good pad.

My wife shoots the Extrema 2 with the kickoff system, she's about 115 lbs and runs 3.5's when she can convince me to buy them.
Definitely need to go with a gas operated semi though, the pumps will make her not want to shoot anymore.

As others have said, a good Rem 1100, 11-87, Beretta 390 /391 or something similar. Gas operated shotguns siphon off some of the gas from the spent shell to eject and load a new shell. That makes them have less recoil. Since she is a little thing, stay away from the 12. Can she shoot it? Sure. But it hurts after a while. Fun is probably way too heavy and long for her to handle well. 20 ga is very popular and you find it just about everywhere. 16, 28, and .410 have less recoil than the 12, bit shells are gonna be more expensive... Like 2 or 3x that of a popular 20 ga. Real cool that your wife is into it. Make it fun for her and enjoy your time in the field together.

She likes to shoot a good 1911 in 45 ACP - but nothing else seems to appeal to her.
She is very good with a 45 though, I have to giver her that.

Beneli m4 12 gauge. Really light but the semi auto really takes the punch out of it. That or she will shoot a 12 gauge beretta O/U we have.

I finally settled on a .28 gauge O/U and couldn't be happier. Zero recoil and I've been able to hit more clay's.

Now mind you a lot of the shooting she does with it is while wearing a lot of layers, but she still has shot a couple hundred rounds of sporting clays in a day before with minimal soreness.

Wife runs both 20 and 12.
Shot guns are kind of like clothing, the better fit the better the experience.
My wife has an very long length of pull. Once gun was fitted to her and lengthened she has no issues going between the two. She prefers the 20ga based on gun weight.

This sums it up my wife is VERY VERY recoil sensitive. I had to download a 243 ai shooting a 58gr vmax for her. She ended up loving the Mossberg SA-20. Its a youth 20ga but i find myself using it when she isnt there, and i love my o/u's. Highly recommend it. Have run about 5 cases through it with cheap federal dove loads and not had a hiccup or skipped a beat.

Syren, Weatherby SA-08 Youth/Compact, Mossberg SA-20 Youth/Compact, Browning Silver Micro Midas, Winchester SX3 Field Compact. Whichever fits her the best.
The vast majority of women need a shorter LOP and higher comb than men. Shooting a shotgun with a LOP that is too long great exacerbates felt recoil. The shot guns listed above have shorter than normal LOPs. Stock combs can be raised inexpensively.

Make sure you have the gun fitted to her. My wife shoots a Ruger Red label in 20ga. she's 5' 3" also. I cut three inches of the stock and installed a one inch recoil pad. She never complains about recoil. Just where are we hunting?

I bought my wife a 20 gauge youth model for the fit, she shot it maybe twice. No free lunch, trade weight for recoil.

FWIW, my BIL picked up a Yildiz 20ga. o/u for my sister a couple of years ago. It's a slick gun, but it kicks more than my 12ga. Rem 870.

She once shot a flying sparrow at 15 feet with a 12 ga shotgun... Besides bits of feather, all that we found afterward was one of the legs.
