We have used 55 gallon drums for storing extra bags of corn for over 20 years with no issue for short term 3 or 4 months. Just be sure the lids can breath if you use the locking ring. Take the foam seal off the lid so it can breath. I bought plastic drum lids from Grainger about 10-12 years ago and got rid of the locking ring lids. We store extra bags of corn mainly used for our road feeders that we use every weekend. Who wants to stop and buy one or two bags of corn every weekend when you can buy it once a month. We have 3 of these lids on our drums in camp that set out in the open everyday of the year. We get 4 -5 50 lb bags in a drum. Here is a link to the lids.

Aflatoxin levels can rise to very high levels if corn isn't stored properly. Just a thought.

I have kept several bags and an open bag in mine (use for hand corning) for 3 months and no issues.

I was given several drums of seed wheat that is now 4 years old. It is in 55gal drums with locking rings. I used dry ice in the drums after filling with wheat. I put about a pound of dry ice in each drum, then tightened the lids before it had sublimated (changed from a solid to a vapor) to displace the oxygen. I have yet to have an issue with any of the grain. The grain looks good as I use it and still is fertile.
