It seems like everybody and their dog owns a Modern Sporting Rifle. Is it the new 30-30?

Not the new 30-30 bc there are way more options and calibers to choose from which I think is what people like.

I remember about 10 years ago I was dying to have an AR but I couldn't afford one. They were $1500+ back then for a decent rifle. Last year I built 7 of them. Times have definitely changed.
Haha yea I polished that thing for hours.

This is an article from December 2014: Denny, a former FBI agent and a Navy veteran, estimates the number in the United States now "somewhere around 8 or 9 million. The rate of them being produced is just enormous," he said. And that's just one type of semi-automatic, high-capacity rifle. http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/natio...rated/19836755/Every shooting and Democrat push for gun control drives people to buy more.

I'm guessing that if AR15s had wood furniture and military and police didn't use them they wouldn't be popular.

Everyone of they guys I hunt with own at least one. They are easy to customize, handle, have plenty of knock down power for Texas game, and are easy to carry in the field.

It's good on space savings. Put your AR15 lower in a backpack along with a 22LR upper, a 223 upper, and a 6.8 SPC (or 300blk) upper. One could be set for about any game in North America. Technically one rifle.

Everyone I know who shoots has at least one. I could probably account for a thousand just through people I know. I don't have one. Nothing against them, it's a fine platform, just personal preference.

Some of the appeal of ARs also is the interchangeability and cheaper parts. Can't afford the gun you want? Pick up a complete lower for under 200 bucks. You can pair 100 different uppers and essentially have that many different guns.

You can shoot anything from a 17 HMR to a single shot 50 BMG. List of calibers near the bottom: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AR-15
