I have a Ruger American I carry in the Kubota. What is the best and most durable method of rust proofing it?

WD40 Specialist Corrosion Inhibitor.
Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.

Normally I'd agree on wd40, but in a dusty environment it'll turn into a dirty mess I would think.

Yup. Or clean with acetone, and shoot it with Krylon.

Yup. Or clean with acetone, and shoot it with Krylon. I tried the painting on a rifle years ago. Paint would get scratched and then rust. I have seen WD 40 kill primers and it is very dusty here. I don't bring it in when it rains. Only time I clean it is if I shoot it. What is cerakote? scratch easily? Long lasting? How much to do a rifle? How long does it take?

I would get a stainless gun for something like that. When I lived 20 miles inland from the Gulf Coast, I quit buying blued guns altogether, and didn't start buying them again until I moved up into the high desert.
Kind regards, charlesb

Cerakote won't hold up to constant rubbing for to long if your not using a rifle holder of some sort. I have several cerakoted rifles that have rubbed down to bare metal from riding in the truck. Mostly on the end of the brake and along the ridges of the flutes. I will say I'm hard on hunting rifles and rarely use a case.

It never sees the inside of the house unless I clean the bore. It is like a tool that you carry with you all the time. Thanks for the information on the cerakote. If it rubs off then I am no better off than I am now. Will have to start greasing it up more.

Before stainless rifles were common, I heard the guys in Alaska used to pull the barreled action and put Johnson's Paste Wax on all of the metal. I've done it once or twice, but the conditions were never all that bad, so I can't personally give a yea or nay.

Might try Kroil penetrating oil liberally applied and allowed to soak in for a couple days. Will keep a RemRust finish on an SPS from rusting.

Have been using this for years. Coat the gun, wipe it off and the gun is protected repeat occasionally.

I think the idea about Johnson's paste wax makes the most sense for a blued gun, and will provide the best, most long-lasting protection.
Cheap, too! - You can throw a can in the tool box, in case the rifle (or something else) needs a bit of touch-up at one point or another.
Kind regards, charlesb

This stuff is more pricey than traditional paste waxes but very popular with serious gun owners. It works extremely well at protecting both wood and metal. Renaissance Wax

Since this is a tool, it would seem getting a stainless steel rifle would be a better choice than the time and expense of cerakoting or dealing with all the other rust preventatives. A Savage Axis with a composite stock would be a good staring point.
I was wrong...on anything technical. Fitz............. is right, ya know............
