My 9 yr old wants to buy a .22. Our new lease is loaded with hogs and other varmints that he could shoot if he had a little more pop. He shoots a .243 for deer, but I wanted opinions on the .17's and .22 mags that are available. Oh, and for the record i am aware that neither are considered great hog guns. I am just looking for something that as we drive the ranch and see "stuff" it has a little more pop than the .22lr. Thanks in advance for your thoughts and comments.

I bought a Henry lever .22 a while back and like it. I'm buying a lever .44 mag as soon as I find one on the shelf. I've alwYs had a 22-250 for a truck gun. The 44 will replace that, for a while.

Between the 2 I'd opt for the .22WMR We have member's here who've shot hog's with the .17 and it is a fun lil round, but can be challenging on a windy day.
Marlin, Ruger and Savage all have rifles chambered in .22WMR and as Scalebuster mentioned, Henry makes a very fine choice as well.

The purpose you describe, IMO, is a good fit for the 243 he already shoots.
That said, buy him a 22lr and let him shoot what he wants.

223 all day in your scenario. I keep wanting to buy a 22 mag or a 17, but then I price ammo and I can shoot steel case 223 for less money than the other two.
The secret to a long life is to try not to shorten it.

If you still go .22mag take a look at the Ruger American. I bought one over a year ago. Finally shot it Saturday. I'll be keeping it.

the .17WSM is a fairly new caliber out that will fit exactly what you're looking for (skip the .17HMR...). Plenty of ammo available and performance that can't be beat by any other rimfire!

The least I would go is 223 or 22-250. IMO since he already uses a 243. 22 good for squirrels and rabbits. Maybe a 20 ga. something different.

One vote for a .22 rifle that he wants. Everyone should have a cheap plinking rifle to learn on and improve on and he can shoot it for as long as he wants. It's not as if this is going to be his only purchase in the coming years.

Some of my best memories are walking through the woods with a single shot .22 hunting by myself. I would get him a .22 LR and let him go to town.
I'm a huge fan of the .22 WMR, probably because when I was a kid in the 60's a 22 mag was the holy grail for me and I never got one. I do have one now and I'm partial to CZ. But for a 9 yr old? Get him a .22 with iron sights, no scope and let him blast away.
Don’t roll those bloodshot eyes at me.

I got a savage 22 mag, real nice and lightweight 16" barrel that i really like alot. They are easy on the wallet as well might be worth looking into.

Have you ever considered a 357/38 lever action? Everybody that has shot my Rossi M92 loves everything about it. It can be loaded light or almost to 30-30 levels.

Every man or boy needs a 22 lever action. I like the new Henry's but I traded one of those sweet little browning short throw levers 25 years ago and I sure wish I had it back. I may have to invest in another one of these days.

Ok guys. I like the idea of a .22lr iron site for him to home his shooting. That is what I learned on and was trying to make this too difficult. Already have the AR, so thanks again guys.

I have taken quite a few with the 22WMR, its fine at closer ranges. I haven't had as much luck with the HMR. Between the 2 I'd opt for the .22WMR We have member's here who've shot hog's with the .17 and it is a fun lil round, but can be challenging on a windy day.
22Mag is even more challenging on a windy day. HMR has way less wind drift.
