I'm building a house right now and have a lot of scrap OSB and 2x4s. I plan on building a deer blind or two and a smoker.
My blind right now is 4x4 and rotten. Won't last till winter. Holes everywhere.
Is 5x5 blind a good size for one person? What height should I make it? I'm 6'2". Oil based paint? I don't know much about paint. How long should an OSB blind last if I paint it well and do upkeep every year?
I've read people's OSB blinds fall apart quickly and some say they last 10 years.
I'm just wanting a near free blind that will last more than 5 years.

Make sure you get a good coat of paint on all the edges, there is a exterior side to the OSB, make sure to use a good primer before painting, all nails, screws holes coated. OSB is not the best, last a couple of years even with good maintenance. Use a good exterior caulking if needed on joints or place a board over with edges caulked. If you were cramped in the 4x4 go bigger, sometimes bigger is better. If you are 6'2" then the lowest point should be at least 6'10".

I have a 4x6 OSB blind in Kansas that is in very good shape and has been there for about 7 years. I also had 2 others here in Texas that has lasted 10 years. A good paint job when built and then about every 2-3 years and they will last a long time. Do not use OSB for the horizontal parts (floor) of the blind. Vertical or sloped will allow the water to run off quickly. Like has been said paint ALL the edges heavy.

Thanks y'all. That answers most questions.
As for paint, do I use oil based? I don't know much about paint. I'll be watching mccoys for oops paint.

How should I make the Windows? Should I use plywood? Hinge up or down? What size? Is bigger better or should I make them small like 1ft wide? What height? How tall? Any tips on shelves or hangers inside the blind? Anything you wish you had?
Remember I'm going for a near free blind. I will have 2.5 months off soon so time is not an issue:).

I built one 5x5 and I love it. Only used one extra sheet of wood over a 4x4 blind, and the extra room is really worth it. I'm right at 6 foot tall, I made mine 6'6" in the back, sloped down to 6' in the front. Less area for the heat to rise. I used a gallon of exterior latex oops paint from Lowes, it was already green, but a truly horrific, almost neon green. I told the paint guy what I was doing, and he darkened it up for me for no extra charge.

I made my windows about 9-10 high with the bottom ledge at 38" from the floor and only half way around the blind. I do not put windows on the back wall of my blinds, Don't want the deer that might be coming from the back to see movement in the blind. My wife is on the short side & she does hunt. You might want to go 40" unless you might have others hunting with you. I hinged the windows (OSB) where they were in an up position while I was hunting. It would not hurt if you used 2-3 coats of paint. The edges are the main spots to be concerned about.

Window height should depend on whether the blind will be elevated on not.

I want to paint it really good. I have two gallons of white killz2 also. Just have to find it. Can I use that first and then coat it a good color last?

On OSB, use the best quality latex you can afford, latex has much better flexibility, there is also a quality difference in cheap latex and premium for exterior use.. Use a latex primer, then latex paint
On the exterior corners, you would be wise to add 1"x4" pine trim (over the painted OSB) and caulk the hell out of every seam with a good latex caulk. set the trim to over lap in an opposite way as the osb overlaps at the corners as well.
Just keep in mind that water/moisture are you biggest concerns with OSB. My 8'x8' blind has OSB walls and is about 5 years old, just now needing to repaint mine.

Built several out of OSB used a good deck restoration paint, filled the corner cracks with roof coating and wrapped with 1/8'' rubber mat used to line dikes on a well site, used it for the roof also. No runs no drips no errors so far. Stands been up five years and still look new, if they start falling apart I'm going to cover with cheap tin and be done with it. No sure where your hunting but where I'm at it gets pretty dry and hot so that may help with moisture.

I have one gallon of travel trailer roof coating. It's something for the rubber roof on them. Would that work for coating it? Anyone ever used it on wood? Can I paint over that stuff? Window height should depend on whether the blind will be elevated on not. It will be elevated about 6'. One view will be flat ground and another view will be down a hill. Anyone ever used a string to pull open windows and hold them up? Any pictures of that? I have most of it figured out on how to build it. Just still wondering about Windows.

On each splice in the walls I'm going to put a trim piece on the outside. Then I'll put trim around the top. And I'll cut out the windows and trim around them. I'll put a little stoop on the windows and the Windows will be slide up and down wood.
Any of y'all ever made wood Windows that slide up and down?

Is this a quiz? Answer: Oriented Strand Board Very impressive. You've elevated the average IQ of this place. I was beginning to have serious doubts.
