Burris XTR II
I have one on loan from Burris and it impresses me. I sold a Viper PST and am getting to test drive the Burris, write a review, then get to purchase it if I wish. From the first day I had it out of the box to now, almost three months later, it has impressed me with the bang for the buck. The turrets are very tactile, and you have to mean to turn them, which is opposite of the problem I had with the Viper, they turn to easily. The glass is plenty good, the reticle is very useful, and it has a built in zero stop. They are also illuminated if you need that at night.
I have the 3-15X wanting a magnification range that will work at 20 yards, out to 800, and it is doing great at those distances. If I were a guy that was going to buy one to do everything, I'd probably go with the 4-20X, simply because 5X on the low end can be too much for close shots. It is do-able, I have been using 5X up close for years, but I would like less. They also make a 5-25X is why I bring that up.

I don't know what your budget is, but if the Burris that Jason mentioned is out of your price range, Primary Arms makes some very serviceable mil/mil ffp scopes that are 1/4 the price of the Burris.
Haha yea I polished that thing for hours.

Don't really want to drop 1k if I can avoid it. Never used mil/mil so gonna be a learning curve as it is I understand having a budget. But I have to mention there are two very important things $1K plus tends to get you. This out glass clarity, and reticle design. Two things that are of utmost importance is tracking and return to zero. Tracking is when you dial up 1.0 Mil it really causes a 1.0 Mil correction, not .8 and not 1.2 and a good tracking scope will make the adjustment you tell it to every te. I know y correction by heart for my 6.5 Creedmoor, and every week I shoot at distance for the first shot of the day. I know without a shadow of a doubt that 3.6 Mils is a 600 yard correction. I have to have a scope that any time I tell it to come up 3.6 Mil that is exactly what it will do. No my life doesn't depend on it, but I don't like missing targets in competition, and I don't like missing coyotes and hogs that far out. I've had customers out that had poor tracking scopes, and you'll see it when the ballistic calculator produces predictions and half of them work, while the other half were off one way or another. Return to zero meaning after you turn that elevation knob up, down, up, down, shoot, shoot, shoot, and you want to come back to a dime sized target at 100 yards the scope will really come back to "0" and hit zero at 100 yards every time. The scope I have that has had its elevation turret, magnification ring, and focus ring turned the most is my SS 5-20X I would be surprised if they totaled in the 10,000 mark, and it's still as reliable as a brand new one. edit: I'm not saying less expensive scopes won't track well, just to be aware of paying attention to those two things, what ever brand you buy. And by the way, not any single brand track 100% perfectly, no matter how much you spend.

Need to learn more about it in general. Don't really understand it at this point and I want to start long range shooting.

Cry once and get the Burris. I own one myself. Jason is right, it only takes one day to learn what you don't know now and well worth the time and expense.

You simply will not get them both for less than that as a rule and even at that price the glass is not great...it's good but not great.

All depends on "decent" glass
A vortex 4-16 will take you to 1k and is less than $1000
Hell if you just want one to mess around a Leopold mark ar is not bad

You can buy a good used vortex viper pst 4x16FFP used 650-700$ Vortex viper pst 6x24ffp can be bought used between 650 and 750$. They'll both shoot out to 800 yards no problem.

Bushnell LRHS 3-12 is a GREAT scope, holds it's own against scopes costing a lot more money. I have used one to shoot to 1k with no problem.
Not impressed with the PSTs

I picked up a Burris xtr ii 4-20x50 it has the G2B mil dot. I like it a lot . Another good entry level would be the Bushnell elite 3-12x44 you can pick one up on the Snipers Hide right now for around $600.00. I have one and it's a really good scope that will get you out to 800-1000 yards easy.

I don't think OP ever listed a budget, but $500-$600 is at the end of what I would consider the "entry level" price range. I actually had a $250 SWFA SS 16x42 that I replaced with the 3-15x42, so there are even more entry level scopes than the $500 range that still perform really well if you can live without zoom. IMHO, $1000 scopes are not even remotely "entry level", but it depends on what your perspective is. If you have $2000-$6000 scopes on some of your rigs, I'm sure $1000 is a budget model. But most folks trying to get advice about scopes don't fit that mold. JMHO

You can get a good basic deer rifle scope for under 500 that will do what most deer hunters need it to do. As soon as you throw on the FFP you are raising the bar that is considered entry level.

It has ten Mils per rev.

It has ten Mils per rev. Ok, that is the newer style. Older ones were 8 mil per rev. Thanks.
