I finally drank the Kool-aid on a black rifle. I'm shooting it better each time out. I'm looking for experienced advice on a good hog round. Barrel is 1:7. Thanks

I have shot and dropped plenty of Hogs big and small with the ole trusty 55 gr SP.
Shot placement is key.
Stay away from ballistic points or Frangible bullets with hogs. They don't penetrate enough and will sound more than kill.

With it being 1:7 twist, if it was me I would step up to the 60 or 70 grain soft points. A little more weight.

Since you have a 1:7" twist, I'd recommend a heavier bullet. Sierra makes a 65 grain SP gameking that my son uses in his 223 bolt gun with decent results (not great, but decent). The best bullet I have found is the Nosler 64 grain bonded solid base bullet. It holds together much better than the standard cup and core lead bullets, and will penetrate very well. If you went with just shear weight, a 77 grain SMK works pretty good. Lots of crap has been killed with a 77 grain SMK. After shooting stuff with a 223, a 223 will take down a hog, but it's definitely not the best choice. Step up to an upper in 300 Black Out and it's a game changer!!!

On the same topic, which hunting round would be decent for 1:8 5R 16" barrel in 5.56? Thanks.

We shoot the 64 and 65 grain bullets out of a Tikka T3 bolt gun with a 1:8" twist. It will also stabilize the 75 grain Hornady BTHP.

I have killed many hogs with .223 62gr Federal Fusion. Shot placement in the head/neck is key though. I prefer bonded bullets. The 64gr Nosler is great. I'd imagine the new tipped trophy bonded bear claw Federal just released would be great.
For non-bonded the SMK's, TMK, and Hornady BTHP are also great choices.
I use a 20in 5R 1/8 and a 1/9 16" barrel and I have never had a problem as long as I put the round where it needs to go.

The 75 gr hornady bthp sounds like a choice, but I'm assuming the POI would be too different when blinking with 55gr without resighting? Guess i have to stick with hunting bullets that are closer to 62gr?

I use 62 grain Barnes TSX in my 223 bolt gun and 62 grain Fed Fusions in my AR. If it shoots 55 grain well a 55 grain soft point will kill them just as dead.
Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.

The 50 packs of Hornady soft points do pretty good. Don't over think all the twist stuff. Aim for the 4" ear

A real hunter never returns empty handed. Spending time in the wilderness temporarily satifies the soul, but leaves us longing for more.

Speer LE Gold Dot 64gr. I got the best accuracy & damage w/this round. If you luck out, you can find it for $9.99/20.

I have used hand loads with the Swift Scricco 2 75 grain for almost 2 years now. It's a great pig killer under the limits of the .223 cartridge. I am also experimenting with the 77 grain tipped SMK. It's a less expensive option that I like so far with very limited experience. Maybe in a couple years, I'll have enough hogs to recommend it? The 77 grain SMK is crazy accurate in my newest AR build with a WOA barrel.

Have shot a pile of hogs with the good ole 75 grain bthp! Chad whats the main difference between a 300 blackout and a .223 shooting heavy bullets in it with a 16" barrel, since you called it a game changer?

My AR likes 64 grain Winchester Powerpoints and my son's likes 65 grain Sierra GameKings(handloads). He likes to use his AR for hogs, I prefer something bigger.
Don’t roll those bloodshot eyes at me.

I have had good experiences with the 65 gr Sierra Gameking. Affordable, accurate, and good terminal results. Shot a Big Bend javelina with one a week ago in fact, bullet did an outstanding job, but that isn't a very tough test.
