I have everyone dial out to 800, then start over doing pure holds out to 800, because it is something everyone has to know how to do. And that is because there are cases where the speed matters. I actually practice pure holds very often. Best I've done on my range is 200 to 800, ever hundred, in 60 seconds.
I completely agree holds are much easier 400 yards and less, but I will always dial if I have the one second needed to do so. Then I can concentrate on wind hold only, and get to live on my windage line, instead of down in no man's land, out in space (unless using a Horus type reticle)
He is wanting to get a new scope, I might as well point him to the one that will make life the easiest. Will a PST 6-24 have enough hold at 800 on top of my .308, assuming 100yd zero with a decent bullet?

You "can" hold it that far out, but why as a regular practice?
You'll be down in the bottom of the scope, and a long ways from your windage line. It takes one second to reach up and dial the elevation.

FiremanJG, left you a voicemail. RedSnake, thanks for the input. Kudos to Fireman for having a ridiculously high ratings I was going to get the gun and shoot it/zero it/set up at/during/with class. But I've got a couple of months to go; just freaking out because of excitement.

You mentioned holding out to 800 as part of the class, which I would eventually like to take. Was wondering if it would be possible. I would certainly prefer to dial at almost any distance given enough time to do so.

Most decide holding for that much distance is not something they want to do all the time. I thought you were planning on doing it as regular practice.

On another note, I'm going 6-24 Viper PST FFP on the 270.
Had it, sold it, got the Burris. The Viper took a little tumble on a Mule deer hunt and lost zero. Sounds like my experience with the Viper 1-4.
The secret to a long life is to try not to shorten it.

Your vanguard should have a large number of base/ring options as it uses the same base as a rem 700. I used Warne two piece bases and rings for years but have switched over to a one piece picatinny for a different reason. I got tired of having to buy extended bases when the scope tube was too short. I use EGW now and pay the little extra to get Torx head screws instead of Allan. Vanguards use the same two piece base as a Remington 700 but DO NOT use the same one piece base.
Don’t roll those bloodshot eyes at me.
