Hypothetically, of course. Caliber: 7mm-08, 270, or possibly 7mmRemMag Budget: $2000, scope included. Wanting to keep it under $1500, if possible Misc: wood stock Looking at Monarch 5, VX3, and the Vanguard Sporter. Have at it

Vanguard Sporter would be great in .270 or 7mm-08. Wouldn't get one in a magnum cartridge because the Sporter only comes with a 24" barrel in all calibers. I would want a 26" barrel with a 7mmRM. Just my opinion, there are many who like a 7mmRM with a 24" barrel.
Either scope would be great.

If you use a 7 mag, you can use light loads in it for general use and full power loads for elk. I use either Hornady Custom Lite or Remington Managed Recoil for deer in my 7 mag. The ballistics are almost identical to a 7mm-08. For the big stuff like nilgai and elk, I go back to the full power rounds.

I feel you're going to get a bunch of different answers on caliber selection, but Cleric pretty much hit the nail on the head.
IMO a 30-06 is probably one of, if not the most versatile rifles out there. Bullet selection is great and reasonably priced for over the counter, has plenty of knock-down for an elk at decent range, but little enough for whitetail hunting. It's just an all around great caliber.

You have asked this question 100 times and you already know your answer. How is that tikka 7-08 you were going to buy ?

I'd want something faster than a 7-08 for elk. I'd go 7 mag or 300 mag.
It is far more important to be able to hit the target than it is to haggle over who makes a weapon or who pulls a trigger.

I bought a 7mm rem. For elk but end up carrying my .270.
You'll shoot a .270 way more than a 7mm or .300 anyway
Go hunt a few times....if you make a habit of mountain hunting buy a dedicated elk rifle in .300 win.
Until then buy a good mid caliber deer rifle
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

I killed both of my New Mexico bulls with a 270WSM. It's a Remington XCR topped with a Zeiss Conquest 4-14x44. Proabably have about $1500 in it. It's light enough to carry all day in the mountains but enough gun to down a bull.
Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.

I'd want something faster than a 7-08 for elk. I'd go 7 mag or 300 mag. Why? The 7x57 has been crushing African game for decades, at moderate speeds, and plains game are every bit as tough as elk. A 7mm-08 with good bullets like a partition, accubond, TTSX, etc will kill any elk anywhere when you put the bullet in the right place. All ad moderate recoil I might add.

After using one I like them better than the Lp or the Nikon.

Either scope would be great. In 2017 the Vanguard will come with a 26" barrel in magnum calibers!

270, 308 or 7mm-08 would be fine, assuming you're not trying to shoot across the mountain. A guy in the outfitters section took a grizzly with an sks. What caliber do you currently have?

I would really consider the 3006, ammo is always available even in the one horse towns, local hardware stores even seen in feed stores in Colorado. I used the 180 gr. DRT.

I would go Tikka T3 Lite in 270wsm, 7mm mag, or 300wsm, with the best glass you can afford. Or Remington 700LR in 30-06.

You have asked this question 100 times and you already know your answer. How is that tikka 7-08 you were going to buy ? I decided not to, and a long time ago. Previously, I asked for a general deer rifle, and the consensus for that was the venerable 7-08 T3. But this is a little different. If you must troll, then do it correctly. And a question repeated is better than a question unasked. I don't like the Tikka wood stocks. I know, buy the synthetic, buy aftermarket wood. Plus I love the Vanguard series. Settled (hypothetically) on 270, Vanguard Sporter. Now for scope I realized why not go with what I already know works (like the Vanguard): Conquest HD5. Now the question is, do I go 5-25x or 3-15x? I'm thinking the former, because my Conquest @ 14x is decent out to 3/400yd, and I'm not shooting farther than that. Also, this hypothetical gun would see action in TX, and I see no point of 25x other than 400+, which we've established is past my comfort/ability. So, 3-15x, then? Yeah...3-15 sounds better. Yes? I bought a 7mm rem. For elk but end up carrying my .270.
You'll shoot a .270 way more than a 7mm or .300 anyway
Go hunt a few times....if you make a habit of mountain hunting buy a dedicated elk rifle in .300 win.
Until then buy a good mid caliber deer rifle Thank you for this in particular. I like this idea lol. Again, thanks to everyone for replies and input. I have a 22-250 right now that's done the job under 250yd for TX game. Won't do it for this. As for 30-06, I already have one in the house and if this hypothetical doesn't become real, then I'll probably end up borrowing one.

300 Remington ultra mag , shooting power level 2 loads ( I can't recall what that bullet is but it put my elk down nicely)
