Is this 1983 Savage stock salvageable or does it need to be replaced? I've been having slight accuracy issue with my dad's 30.06. Apparently when my deceased father worked on this last he didn't use a torque wrench and ate right through the wood of the rear trigger mount. Is this fixable with wood glue or some other compound material? I'd like to keep if possible? But also want a usable rifle.

I think that screw just holds the trigger guard to the stock, isn't that correct? I'd fill the hole with bedding or epoxy and drill the hole out for a good fit of the screw and call it good. If you're having a genuine accuracy issue, I doubt this is the cause.

Yes that is fixable, and there are a couple different ways to go about it. Ideally,
1. Drill out the busted wood with a Forstner bit. 2. Use a plug cutter to make a plug through the flatsawn face of a similar wood ( since its hidden any good hardwood will work). 3. Glue the plug in regular yellow wood glue 4. Drill the pilot hole.
You could also use epoxy.
Or set the cracks with thin Cyano acrylate glue ( fancy way to say super glue, and then stuff a few tooth picks dipped in wood glue in the hole.

Agree with both posts above those methods will take care of the problem, and doubt that is an accuracy issue.

Thanks folks. Accuracy not because of trigger guard screw. I was taking rifle apart in order to float barrel and bed action. Barrel is rubbing in multiple places which I believe is causing accuracy issue.

Barrel is rubbing in multiple places which I believe is causing accuracy issue. Emory cloth with a sawing action, and the barrel in place. Forget the dowel rod. Barrels taper from action to muzzle, dowel rods do not.

A non-tapering barrel.
What contour is "bull"?

Bulls are usually one inch diameter full length or almost, but you knew that.

Number 3b "Lt.Bull Sporter" @ 6" is .900" diameter, @ 26" is .700" diameter
Number 4 "Bull Sporter" @ 6" is 1.00" diameter, @ 26" is .750" diameter
Those are the only two that have the word "bull" in them, but they are on the lighter side of contours. They still taper, and a dowel rod still does not.

I've used the dowel tool on a couple of 10/22's successfully, but I go pretty slowly and continuously test with a lengthwise folded dollar bill for proper clearance. I'll play shootumup with y'all out to fifty. Beyond that I'll fetch the beer. Peace out
