I've been hunting all my life but never had any nice scopes on my guns. You know, simmons, tasco, just about the cheapest we could find, always worked ok for what we needed. Now, I have a new rifle that I would like to put some nice glass on, and with no experience with high dollar optics, I turn to my fellow THF'rs for some insight. Are the Swaro's worth the money? Should I save until I can afford that or a Zeiss, or is there a less expensive solution? Thanks!

What will the rifle be used for? I guess to me it doesn't matter. I would go with a Leupold any day of the week no matter if the gun is for Hunting, Competition, or just punching paper on the weekends. BEST warranty in the business. Lifetime, no matter what the issue. You drop it and it the glass breaks, or you run over it with the truck. They will repair or replace it. Plus they have very generous eye relief for the heavier recoiling rifles to help avoid the scope eye scar that everyone tries to hide.

Zeiss without a doubt I have several of them and they are worth every penny. I would save for a year if I had to, in order to put good glass on a gun. I'd rather have $700 dollar glass on a $200 dollar gun than a $200 scope on a $700 dollar gun. If you can't see it you can't shoot it. I do a LOT of night and low light hunting for varmints and Zeiss Conquest dollar for dollar is the best I've found. Just my.02

What magnification are you looking for? I guess the better question is what is the max range you will be shooting? If inside 300 yards, I would save the money you would spend to get a Zeiss and get a Leupold, some ammo, targets, and pay the range fee (if you don't have the land readily available for shooting) to get it sighted in to your liking. There is a reason Leupold is the #1 scope used by long range competition shooters. Plus, they are the standard issue for military snipers as well. Says something about them. Oh yeah, and they are made right here in the USA.

If you will check the Cabelas bargain cave, they frequently have some of the higher end scopes at discounted prices. I have bought a lot of scopes from the bargain cave and put them on layaway. To me, high end is Leupold VXIII or better. I am too darn cheap to buy Zeiss, but they are awesome of you can afford them. I have seen both Zeiss and Swaro at discounted prices there.

God is so good to me.

For all around hunting my vote goes to the Leupold Vari X III 3.5X10. I think the Leupold is as good as any of the more expensive brands.

Thanks guys! I'll check that site out BMD. I'm looking for something that I can get a good look out to around 600 yards +/- Just something I can play around with at long distances.

Are Swaro, Ziess, S& B worth the money.... some yes some no.
If your just hunting yotes at night and punching paper any $200-300 scope will do.
Personally If I had the Money I'd grab a swaro or Ziess anyday of the week.

Not a huge leoupld fan, not becuase of qaulity but becuase of price. They are good scopes with great warranty. But I personally feel you can find better optics for the money. Example the VXIII is compairable to the Monarch which is 100-200 bucks less. I heard some great things about the Bushnell 6500's but their price point puts them up with the meopta and Ziess/Swaro/S&B and they aren't that good
For the price range these are my picks. Conquest does everything I need in a scope.

1000+ Ziess or Swaro or S&B
800-1000- Meopta
600-800 Ziess Conquest
400-600- Nikon Monarch
200-400 Vortex
under 200 VXI or Burris

Just an opinion. I have several nicer leupolds etc. but the number one thing for me and especially if you are shooting long distance is the reticle. I like Fine croshairs. If you look at alot of sniper, long range style scoped they are all thin.

I have a Swaro, and they are no doubt top notch scopes, but in my opinion they are not worth the price difference when comparied to a Leupold!

I have owned several Ziess and still own a couple today! Once again they are great scopes, but my money still goes to Leupold!

Good Point! Maybe the better question I should have asked is what reticle are ya'll using for long distances...I need that one answered too, I know, I know, I'm a pest.

Just a matter of opinion! I have a Swaro (you have seen it), and my dad has the $1700 (PH series) dollar one! They are great scopes, but I aint gonna pay more than double the price for one!

As far as being "tight"......I just prefer to spend $5000 on 5 guns, not one! I think that makes me a value conchess buyer, not "tight"!

Spend your money how you wish, and I will spend mine how I wish! Thats my buisness not yours!

I would rather have 5 5thousand dollar rigs and am working on it, but that is beside the point, you can't compare leupy to swaro, zeiss, and s&b that is bs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just an observation on the squeeking

I never compaired the Leupy to those three...just the prices! S&B, Zeiss, and Swaro are clearly better scopes! In my opinion they are not worth the extra money over the Leupy though!

Whether or not they were worth the extra money was the question, and in my opinion they are not!

Better scope than a Leupy....Yes!
Worth the extra money over a Leupy.....No!

Just my opinion of course!

I prefer Nightforce www.nightforceoptics.com

Just depends on what your budget and application is. NF has taken some pretty big price hikes I'm not thrilled over. But the NXS series I use have always tracked true and never failed.

this is the 5.5X22X50 with the NP-R1 reticle
