243 or 7mm-08 would be my choices. I know a 243 has a range limit of say 350 or so, but how often do you really shoot that far? In Texas we usually hunt from a stand and tend to draw the deer in and take a well rested shot at deer that are not moving or alerted. 243 will do the job. If your wife is like most women shooters I have seen, then she will place the bullet right where it needs to be. My 10 year old has dropped everything he has shot at with one shot and usually puts them down where they stand. Use a good bullet, we shoot 100 grain Nosler Partitions, and it will do the job quite well.

I started hunting with a 30-30 then moved up to a 30-06. My dad got a great deal on a 243.. started hunting with it and never looked back. Never lost a deer and never had to track on over 40 yards. But i knew my limitations with it I kept all deer shots under 250 with it. I thought I always wanted something with more range on it I went up to the 25-06 and 257 wby... Wife can shoot my 25-06 with no problem. One of the girls at my office who is 5'2 and a 110 lbs put 4 shots with in a 2 inch circle at a hundred yards with my 25-06 and that was the first time she had ever shot a rifle. The only guns I ever carry any more is my 243 and 25-06. I second the good bullets...great bullets in .25 cal guns and under have given small cal rifle a how new outlook
What ever you decide to get her, get her some good ear protection and you just won 90 percent of the battle of her be scared or uncomfortable.

Ditto to getting some good hearing protection. .243 is a good round. It's contingent on what she's comfortable with. I'm 5'8, 115 lbs. and happy shooting all the calibers mentioned.

My wife shoots a 7-08 very comfortably and the grand daughter shoots a 243. I am going to try the daughter out on a 30-06 with the Rem. Managed Recoil loads and see how it works out for her.

My vote goes for the 243. It is a great Texas deer round for anyone.

my wife shoots my ruger m77 mark 2 .308 varmit and loves it
its a little heavy but not much recoil also the ruger .243 is a super gun, like all the other 243's

I am on board with aggie, jgiles, and lone ranger. A .243 is plenty. I strongly believe that consideration for misplaced shots is reason enough to stay at the range or take up a different hobby. It may sound crass, but shooting Texas whitetails isn't like hunting antelope on the prairie where the wind is blowing 30-50 mph with the animal running just as fast.

Do you want her to hunt with you or not. 300mag if you don't want her to go with you.and a 243 257 roberts or 25-06 if you want her to go with you.

It ain't so much what you shootem with, but where you hit them. A kicking weapon will cripple and miss more than a milder one for someone that is sensitive to recoil and noise. That my 2 cents worth.

This past season was my wife's second season to hunt. She is shooting a Remington model 700 BDL in 6mm Remington caliber. She is 5'7, light build and in her late 50's. She loves the rifle and constantly comments on how light the recoil is. To date she has killed 7 deer in two seasons and done her part to fill the freezer
