Is it just me, or do you feel more recoil from the same rifle when target shooting vs. hunting? I was at the range last night and noticed more felt recoil punching paper than I did during hunting season. Maybe it's the adrenaline you get from hunting.

I agree adrenaline, plus what position were you using for target shooting - bench rest? using bags? Bipod? etc? Your stance (bench vs standing vs prone vs kneeling) and use of bags, bipod or other aids all have an impact on felt recoil - at least to me.

adrenaline would have some to do with it, probably most of it. Some felt recoil can come from shooting position as well, shooting from a bench recoil seems more noticeable than positions you can roll with it some. Shooting a 458 Lott sure seemed brutal from a bench but not nearly so bad from standing off hand or on shooting sticks.

I seldom notice recoil when hunting for all of the above reasons however from the bench it is a different case. Not just the position and lack of adrenaline when shooting from the bench or practical shooting positions while at the range but also recoil anticipation plays a role.

I don't find the rifle report loud when hunting or sometimes don't even notice it

I still wore hearing protection most of the time prior to picking up a suppressor, but I did take several shots last year with no hearing protection. Not only did I not notice the report, but I didn't have ringing in my ears. I'm not suggesting to hunt without hearing protection.

It's the adrenaline of the hunt/animal. The focus is not on the recoil at all.
I learned long ago you can't reason someone out of something they don't reason themselves into.

My kids don't even notice recoil while hunting. Totally different sensation than punching paper.

All bad habits, such as jerking the trigger and flinching, are more easily visible when you're on the bench because you have no distractions. If you can overcome them on the bench after many repetitions, they are far less likely to plague you during that single and very critical shot in the field.
Here's something else that often plagues shooters. They notice their groups get worse after several shots and immediately blame the scope or rings. In most cases, they are infrequent shooters who haven't conditioned themselves to overcome bad habits. After two or three shots, the recoil causes them to start flinching and jerking the trigger, which is the true reason their groups are getting worse. And of course, if they're shooting a large bore magnum rifle, they may never condition themselves to overcome the effects of the recoil. These are often the "one shot wonders" who kill a deer with a single shot simply because it has been so long since they fired a shot, they don't have a recent memory of the recoil.

Not exactly.
When I have guys out for the class, we start prone. They focus on sight alignment, breathing, 90 to the trigger, good trigger control, and follow through. They end up hitting small and far. Then we move to supported positions at 2' kneeling, 3' kneeling, and 4'standing (hunting positions) more often than not they start out forgetting their breathing and trigger discipline. But they know when they did something wrong.

IMO, if you can go out and shoot your tightest group after a box or two of shells, you're doing it right.
Simply put, if you don't truly enjoy shooting a given rifle or handgun, you will never become consistently accurate with it.

I agree, for most people. There are a handful that can shoot a rifle as well as the rifle can shoot, no matter what. Not saying I'm one of them, but I can over come bad triggers and heavy recoil fairly well.
I was speaking to the thought process I've seen lots of hunters go through when they get into hunting positions, previously.
