Sotaarms.com is a good alternative. I have one and it shoots good. C products mags are the best. The mags can be the weakPart, load them and leave them loaded to help break in springs. The bcg needs to be well lubed. And the recoil spring should be lubed well too(I used silicon based garage door lube). The breakin of shooting of the firearm will help the action too. Enhanced firing pin(slightly longer) helps with cheap russian ammo too. These helped mine to function better. Others will have their opinions to and reading theirs have helped me make mine work better. Sorry about the rambling.

I got a Badger State Ordnance SPARTAN complete upper 16" Melonite in 7.62x39. It took them 2.5 months. I would suggest a different company.
PSA sells one for $369. Its currently in stock. Comes with the BCG and handle. Not bad at all.

Good summary of what I've read to make a 7.62x39 shoo reliably in an AR platform. Also, good to see feedback on the SOTA. I've considered one many times.

I have heard good things about PSA and Windham. I have also heard sometimes the feed ramps need to be modified by widening them to help reliability.

Sota has a upper as low as $375 shipped. You can get stainless for $400. Add a quad rail and its a little more. All include shipping. Sometimes polishing feed ramps helps with feed issues (also known as a fluff and buff). PSA is a good company to deal with too. I got a 5.56 upper from them too.

Ive always read that the weak point if 7.62x39 ARs was the bolt. Most people use to replace with an upgraded bolt, superbolt i think. I keep toying with whether I want to go 7.62x39 or 458 in my next AR. I like the cheap of 7.62x39 but like the though of launching small missles of 458

I have the PSA 7" 7.62x39 upper and its been working well as a suppressor host although I broke the cotter pin in the bcg last range trip. Im not sure if it broke cause it was dirty from being suppressed all the time or just a weak cotter pin. Other than that im happy with it for the $300 i paid for it

I think going from the curved body to the straight portion in the magwell is what does it.

The 7.62 can be a little difficult to feed reliably. Good mags will take care of it though. I ran ASC mags and never had a problem.

I've been hunting with an AR in 7.62 x 39 by BRB Tactical Systems out of Florida. ( I love this gun) This gun shoots sub 1" @ 100yds! I killed 3 deer this year with the longest shot 185 yds. I use Hornady loaded with sst rounds with no issues, but couldn't use the Timney after market trigger due to the Russian rounds primer strikes.
I never thought of the firing pin extended as brought up here on this post; Thanks!
