thinking about cutting down my .243 2 inches to make it a little easier to carry around. Also I will have my suppressor on it at times.
Will i lose much velocity? Also I read that it will make it quite a bit louder. Will there be much difference?

2 inches shouldn't make much of a difference. I'd guess you will lose around 50-75 fps.

Ive got a barrel at the Smith right now. .308 going from 24 down to 16 to make it handier in the blind. The consensus I got from guys smarter than me, is for a hunting rifle shooting under 300 yards it won't make a noticeable difference.

2 inches won't be enough velocity loss to worry about. If you put the suppressor on it, it's likely to gain back anything you lose.
It's the same price to cut 6" as 2"....just saying.
Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.

That's personal preference. In my situation, my needs from the rifle are equally met with a 16" barrel as 24" barrel, so I didn't have any reason to not cut it as short as legally possible. The handiness was my #1 priority.
If you want/need the extra velocity, it might not be the best option for you. In my case,I was more than willing to lose 200fps.

So should i cut it down more? maybe to 18? 20-25 fps loss per inch cut off the barrel. A .243 is already fast. Personal preference. I cut down my 7mm-08 to 20", since it was halfway between 24" and 16". I figured it was a good compromise between MV and portability. I'm very happy with the decision.

I've done a lot of hunting with a model 7 .243 chopped to 18". Man that was a sweet little rifle.

I bought a 243 at Thanksgiving as my new coyote rifle. Shot 10 rounds of factory loads just to make sure there wasn't a problem with the rifle, then sent it to Morgan Ritchie. He chopped it from 24" to 21" and threaded it. It has lost some speed, no doubt. 243 is pretty overbore, and the more overbore a cartridge is the more speed you lose per inch. 308 doesn't lose as much as a Creedmoor, Creedmoor doesn't lose as much as a 22-250. My Creed lost about 20 fps per inch when I cut it from 25 to 22. I'm not sure exactly how much the 243 has lost because I didn't chrono it before I chopped it. I figure more like 25-30 per inch, but I don't know that.
Anyways, all that is just gun gack. Real world it doesn't make much difference. Especially with a suppressor, the better handling will trump any MV loss. I probably should have cut mine at 20 not 21.

I cut my .308 from 24" to 20" but I didn't want to lose too much for distance. But on a hunting rifle 18" would likely be plenty and if you are going to run it suppressed all the time you might consider going shorter than that even.

20-25 fps per inch is about the normal lose/gain. With a 243, depending on which bullet you are shooting, that number could be a little more. Adding the suppressor will gain about 20-40 fps. So over all, the 2" of barrel lose will not be much. If you are going 2", might as well go 4" for a handier rifle.

Yup. A 20" barrel splits the difference in a long barreled range gun and a 16" carbine length.

Yes, a suppressor will add some fps to your bullet. As a subsonic, you gain about 40-50 fps. As a supersonic round, you can gain about the same, maybe a little more, depending on the cartridge, load, and bullet weight.

Can someone explain the physics to me? ...or is it just because you added a couple inches of tube to the barrel you just shortened.

I guess the extra speed is what causes the POI shift when you put the suppressor on?

I guess the extra speed is what causes the POI shift when you put the suppressor on? More to do with weight on the end of the barrel and barrel harmonics

Seems like there have been several 18" (and shorter) .243's marketed over the years.
Kind regards, charlesb
