Ive been told that there are indeed quail at the grasslands but I have never seen any. I walked extensively over the last couple days with my dog and didnt turn any up. She is a great GSP. If anyone has any pointers (no pun intended) I could really use them, if anyone has any idea of what general units they may be on and would like to go meet up with me and Clare I would like to do that also. Thanks all.

Ran a lot of trials on LBJ and only occasionally came across a wild covey. We normally ended up planting birds in a "bird field" for final placement. Even on a good quail year, the population at LBJ has been slim unfortunately

Hunt 'em if you got 'em! They may not be here next year!

We found a few there in the early 70s. We somehow got on some private property in a great ragweed pasture. The rancher drove up and allowed us to continue our hunt.
Quail hunting is like walking into, and out of a beautiful painting all day long. Gene Hill

You probably need to be out there at the break of day. A covey will whistle just as it gets light to see. After they whistle, you can pin point about where they are. After a few trips and listening at different spots, you can pretty much hunt the same areas and find them since they are territorial.

I've Turkey hunted all over lbj for over 15 years. Have never seen any quail. Fireants hogs and other predators have depleted the quail population within 2 hours of fort worth.

I've seen several coveys by the new gas plant off of 51 this year which isn't too far from the grasslands.

I have only ever seen 1 covey of quail on the LBJ Grasslands in the last 10 years but there is one unit that is designated as a dog training area so there must be quail on it.
Born to hunt and fish.

Thank you all for your input! I've hunted that place pretty hard for the last few years and have never seen any, I had never specifically sought them out either though so I was curious. I am going to try to make a dash up to Gene Howe WMA or some other WMA before the season is up.
