Just picked up my 1500# Lamco timed trough and need some info.
1.) What distance between the spinner cup and funnel do you set?
2.) I've heard 1 pound per second. Anyone ever tested it?
Thanks

The gap is going to depend on the length your pellet was cut or broke at the mill when it was made. I used an index finger to gap mine. I place my finger vertically between the plate and funnel as a gauge. That gap will determine how much feed is allowed to flow out as the motor spins. That amount will vary with the distance you set.
Are idiots multiplying faster than normal people?

I'm not sure what the exact gap measurement is on mine, but I it does put out a pound per second and it never hangs up. You have purchased a great working feeder!

I appreciate the info. It's going to be a few weeks until I get it set-up, but looking forward to it.

If you're not feeding free choice protein you're pizzin in the wind. Depends on how you do it. You can feed free choice and stil be relieving in the wind, and not meeting your goal Certain bucks in a bacholar group can dominate a feeder. If you don't have enough ports, or even only one feeder in a location many of those deer won't get to eat much. You can be highly effective with a timed if you know your densities and or have enough of them. All depends on what your mission is.

If you're not feeding free choice protein you're pizzin in the wind. My old feeder was being emptied every 2 1/2 - 3 weeks and I was doing good to refill every month so the new TIMED feeder will ensure I have protein for a given time. The deer averaged 23 pounds a day from my free choice so dropping 25 should give them "roughly" what they need. It just makes sense from a money and time stand point.

I run a lamco timed protein feeder at every station as well as a free choice. I set my plates about an inch gap and run them for 8 seconds - 4 feedings a day during the growing season and cut them back to 4 seconds during the season. I agree that you will be wasting your $ and time if you are not feeding free choice. The does, and younger bucks will use the timed feeder more and during the growing season when most mature bucks are nocturnal there will not be any feed left in the trough. I have 1 free choice feeder about every 200 acres and a lamco every 250 with my normal feed station. I set my free choice feeders by themselves in a pen.
The lamco feeders are good to pattern deer during the season and they give me a good insurance that the deer will always have protein even if I am a week late on filling my free choice feeders.

I'm throwing 25 pounds once a day at 2:00 am so the nocturnal issue is resolved. I am not using this feeder to bait them in as I have corn that does that just fine. Once I get a feel for the amount of deer accessing the protein I will add/subtract as needed.

Are you seeing many deer during that time or are they waiting until daylight to visit the feeders?

Are you seeing many deer during that time or are they waiting until daylight to visit the feeders? I'm throwing 20 seconds (equals 25 pounds with my gap) once daily. It's been up for just two weeks so I'm unsure of the usage yet, but I am 90% positive it's being hit as soon as it's dropped. I predict this only with the quickness they hit my free choice just hours or sometimes minutes after filling. Having a large bedding area very close to the feed pen and the fact the feed is now "limited" has me thinking they'll be even quicker to the feed once it drops. 21 foot of trough space on the new feeder compared to just two gravity ports leads me to believe more deer can benefit. I'll have a better idea in a month when I pull my SD card.

I'm feeding 12 seconds right now, I bumped mine up a little bit since it has been dryer the last couple of weeks. If you have water nearby you have the right recipe to keep your fawns close. I have found that adding a water trough in my pens helps keep my does close and they will raise their fawn by that pen. Leading to bucks hanging closer to my feeding stations as they mature. I have raised several deer on low fence ranches by using that method.
