http://www.extremestore.us/berger-eol-el...tch-box-of-100/Thinking about building either another 270 or 270 wsm(Tikka LA). It needs at least a 1 in 9 twist, but 1 in 8.3 is ideal. I assume no one is twisting .277 barrels that fast, so who do I use for a custom?

After the fantastic way my rifle shoots, I'll suggest take you take it to Chad. I am beyond happy with my re barreled Tikka.

If I was going to try to launch a 170 I would probably look towards the wsm/wby end of things.
Barnes used to make a 180 gr 270 and ive read that it stabilized in a 1:10 however it was a flat base round nose, so possibly a shorter bullet.
Sounds interesting any how.

Yes, I spoke to Brian Litz at SHOT show about this bullet and the 1:10" twist barrels of the 270 Win. You will need a custom barrel made for it. I'm showing 8.5" twist as minimum, and 1:8" ideal. You will need to call around and see who will be making some 8" twist barrels now. Someone will step up and make some for this bullet. This bullet can take the 270 calibers to a new level.
The issue I see with this bullet is the cartridges available to push this bullet fast enough to better or even equal the performance of other rounds. For example, the 7mm 168 and 180 VLD, and the 180 Hybrid have higher BC's, and have existing rounds able to push these 7mm bullets faster than the available 270 rounds. The 270 WSM would need to be built on a long action to utilize the length of this bullet. If you built it on a short action round, the ogive would be below the case neck and take up too much room into the case. The 270 Win is similar to the 280 Rem, and may equal the speeds of this round, with higher BC bullets in the 7mm.
But, BC isn't everything. This new 170 Berger will definitely allow an improvement to the 270 rounds with an 8" twist barrel.

The 170gr .277 BC is .703 The 168gr .284 BC is .617 The 180gr .284 BC is .659 The 195gr .284 BC is .755 Berger hasn't announced the G7 BC yet on the 170 gr .277, but looks like it stacks up pretty good with G1 BC's. I've seen on other forums, where guys are running the 165 gr Matrix vld to 3000 in 270 wsm.

The G1 BC on Bergers website is listed at .663 I believe, not .703Berger's site shows G1 - .662 and G7 - .339

G1 of .662 is salty. How fast is the standard .270 case going to make it go?
Comparing the .270 to the .280 Rem is the only way to compare apples to apples, leave out the 7 Rem Mag.
This is going to breathe new life into the .270, but it may take a long time to get rifle manufacturers to build a twist to run these bullets.

Watching this one.
Just started using .270 Winchester a couple years ago and this looks promising.
