My son was accepted for a youth turkey hunt in Aprial. He got a new Rossi 20 ga single barrol break over for Christmas and this is what he will hunt with. I know absolutely nothing about scatter guns or bird hunting at all, but thought I should be looking for ammo early. Wally World had nothing but target rounds so I went to the only other store in town that sells guns and ammo. I have a friend who is the sporting goods manager. I spoke with him and they are down to steel shot waterfowl loads, whitch he says are not appropriate for Turkey. He states that he should be getting a big shipment of ammo at the end of the week or beganing of the next week. I had my son call yesterday to see if the ammo order came in, and did they get any turkey loads in. He sayed he had ammo for turkey. ( different employee older contrary fello but knows his stuff about guns and ammo) so we went down there and bought two boxes of the ammo he handed me without looking it over (I have gon on his suggestions several times and trust his opinion). When I got home I found that I had the exact ammo that James sayed was not appropriate. We got Estate high velocity magnem steel shot / 20 ga 3" 1 oz 4 shot. Is this appropriate ammo, or do I save it for next duck season and get him some turkey loads? I got the feeling he sold the sucker what he had, if that is the case I will not trust him again!!!!
Thank You Robert

Yea I figured so, the dumb but sucker thing. But it will cost. This is a reputable storewith good employees, but this dummy sucker will never trust him again, and I will share my experience with others. Thank you so much for your input.

That's what I would use for store bought ammo as well.

What is your cut off distance with the 7s? Speaking in terms of yards, how far out can you whack them with complete confidence. I have about 20 loads of great big 1 7/8 turkey loads but my wife doesn't like them. I will continue to shoot those but I am looking for my wife. She shot one of my rounds in the yard and that shut her down for a long time. Bad mistake on my part, long story. Last year she had problems with her shotgun with a Tom in the decoys. I had to give her mine and she took the recoil because adrenaline wouldn't allow her to process what was happening. Afterwards of course she said it was hurting her quite a bit. So I am in search of a load that would be good for her to shoot, put a good pattern down range and not jam her shoulder like the great big loads would. I loads I have are Remington nitro turkey 1 7/8 OZ

From a stock 20 gauge shotgun, 30 yds. This is a very general and conservative distance. Some guns may shoot well over this. Each gun is different.
I think the fun in hunting spring gobblers is how close you can call them in and harvest a magnificent bird.

I shoot my 20 ga. with the federal heavyweight 7's at a lasered 40 yds. No gobbler is walking away from that pattern but keep in mind that I am also shooting the heavyweight 7 choke from Trulock. I bought Trulock chokes on the advice of G Man and it was money well spent. I have some shot patterns on here posted if you want to take a look at them, the 12 and 20's are both there.

G Man, for the Remchoke, I also bought the Winchester Long Beard XR #6 choke Trulock and it is a total thumper coming out of my 870. Post up on the Pure Gold Tempest after you get your testing done. I am so addicted to spring season that I started marking off my calendar the day deer season closed. It looks like I will be hunting by myself for the most part but I will make the best of the time I have.

There's no doubt that the TSS loads are the premiere loads for turkeys, I just don't want to invest or fool with it. Now, if you like reloading...its the way to go.

From what I have gathered, the equipment is the easy part...its developing the formula that provides an excellent pattern and maintaining safe chamber pressures that's the most important.

Gman Can you buy TSS loads or do you have to reload? I can't find anything but the Tungsten Super Shot for reloading online.
