So.... i am stumped. I have a GAP-10. While trying to adjust the gas block, i cannot get this thing to short stroke. I eventually screwed in allen screw all the way down on the gas block and it still cycles reliably? what gives?

Do you not want it to cycle reliably? Adjusting down the gas coming back is fine. On full power ammo, I don't think you will be able to adjust it low enough to prevent it from cycling.

So the rifle is behaving exactly as it was designed to.

fireman, i have several. i am not wanting a single shot. but i felt my gun was overgassed. so in antempt to get dowwn to the point that it wouldnt lock back, and then plan on backing out a 1/4 to a 1/2 turn. I have been unable to make this gun short stroke.

I thought you were trying to make it not eject at all. If it is ejecting 3 o'clock to 5 o'clock then that is where it is supposed to be.

I'm lost. What are you wanting or trying to achieve? What makes you think you are over gassed?

If I am reading you correctly you are trying to adjust the gas to the point where it will not lock back on an empty mag in order to determine your minimum gas pressure setting. Then you open it up to where you start to get lock back.
Pretty standard procedure to tune an adjustable gas block.
Right?

You ran out of adjustment and are still ejecting. Everything is fine even though you ran out of adjustment but it is bugging you.
That right?

all is correct. ccoker nailed it.
the allen screw is screwed in as deep as possible. gun still locks back and fully functions.
i wanted to check because i broke and extractor, my brass is getting ripped out, and it is ejecting VERY far from me. BCG was getting very dirty as well. and for recoil (minor reason though)

Gotcha. Just keep it on the lowest gas setting and keep shooting!!
My GAP-10 beats up brass also. It's a flat out hammer for accuracy, but it shows pressure signs even on the mild loads.

Chad, Advice taken. Do you mind sharing data with me? By the way, like we were talking about a week ago. My virgin brass was -.006--.008 headspace from my fired brass. It DID open groups up a lot. I reassured myself with some 3x fired brass with -.003 headspace. That helped it out a lot! One other question that I know is me and not the gun is how to shoot it... The chairs at quail creek suck! I can't get comfortable on bipod or rest. I feel all awkward. Do you do development on rest or bipod? Monopod or rear bag?

Are you running suppressed?
What gas block?
Have you tried a heavier buffer?

Not suppressed, I think ga percussion uses a JP block, also standard buffer as they supplied with this rifle.

Another thing on shooting gas guns compared to bolt guns to wring out the accuracy. You MUST follow through. Hold the trigger to the back and wait until impact before resetting the trigger for the next shot. I shoot an 18" Wilson Combat and it is a tack driver when I do the above. I try to really focus on watching the impact, harder to do on paper, but on game or steel it's obviously a lot easier.

Take your buffer out and weight it -- it's possible you need/could use a heavier one.

I test everything laying prone with either front sand bags or bipod, and heavy rear sand bangs (actual sand used). Shooting AR's for groups can be difficult. You will need to learn the personality of your rifle. Does the first shot impact high? Does the last round have a POI shift when the bolt locks to the rear? You have to "drive" an AR well for it to shoot good. Lots of stuff to think about.

Would it be better to shoot 5 and 7 round groups in an AR platform, that way you can just discount the first and last shot?

If you already put a bunch of rounds through it, the screw may be getting bound up by carbon already present in the threads. This could give you a perceived feeling of bottoming out when it actually isn't. Try taking it all the way out and cleaning out the block and then screwing the set screw all the way back in.
