Hunted this week Stand about 100 yds from feeder. One guy walked to feeder to reset timer and came back to stand. 2 hours later a sounder of 12 came in from the right 1/2 way between the feeder and the stand. The lead sow got right to the path that the guy took to reset the feeder and stopped as if she ran into a wall. Sniffed twice and swung around and the sounder exited back the way they came post haste. Couldn't shoot as they were in line with a couple of cows in the background near the feeder. CRAP!

They have amazing smell. Has happen to us many times. I've even had them smell a parked kubota from about 1/8 mile. Sow walked in and immediately stuck her nose in the air, then took off! She was straight downwind from the kubota. Learned my lesson on that on too.
Since you mentioned the cows, here is a trick. Step in some cow dung before make your way to the feeder! It works!

Bummer on your hunt!
Lots of things can spook hogs. They will be back.
I have had hogs do the same thing, being upwind of me at a feeder nobody had been around for days and that they had visited the previous day. In on case, I didn't even manage to reach for my rifle.
By contrast, I have had hogs rub on the treestand I was sitting in at the time and have had the feeding that the feeder within an hour of me spinning the motor to dump more corn.
I have watched hogs pass through a feeder I had tended to earlier and have seen hogs pass through a feeder that nobody had been around. On many occasions, I have gotten singular pictures of hogs under a feeder, meaning they came in, were caught on camera, and gone very quickly.
It can be hard to know what is the actual stimulus for spooking hogs/deer/coyotes when dealing with stimuli that humans can't even recognize and the animals can't tell you about.
You can try stepping in manure. You can try rolling in manure. You can't be too careful.

You'll never know what spooked her. I wouldn't hang my hat on the fact that someone had walked down that trail.

Hogs are a lot like me. They can be absolutely brilliant one second, then do something stupid the next.
It ain't easy being me.

The hogs I've dealt with will not second guess their noses.

All of their senses seem good, including sight and hearing, but they seem to rely on smell the most. As my (so-called) friends sometimes say, "The hogs don't seem to have ANY problem smelling YOU! (snicker)" --
I have two unwritten rules: 1. 2.

A lot has ta do with pressure... Seen a doe do the same thing on last lease... Twas in hurry, & put on hunting cloths, instead of like usual, the next days work cloths... The smell of the foundry got on hunting cloths in the 45 minute ride tis only thing can think of, usualy change cloths when get their.. Hunting cloths in trash bag with pine needles & ceder bark... Last hog took was 20- yrd shot from blind, had put out corn that morning... walked a path to & from right down middle ta cams, so deer & hogs usedta scent, they felt safe, just like all pics see at feeders on here... Deer & hogs also learn ta pattern hunters... Stick with it...

Like mentioned earlier, a hog won't second guess their nose. Well, dang gum....I'd go bet that hand every time little buddy... I have seen hogs do security checks where they sniff the air, run a few steps, sniff again...and either put their head down and eat, walk around nervous, run a few more steps or leave completely. They will repeat all of that over and over. Sometimes they think they get a whiff of something they don't like, but they don't leave because they aren't sure. That is second guessing....and they do it all the time.

Several times this year I've shot multiple pigs at my feeders. After each pig was shot I would walk to the feeder and drag the pig off because I was actually deer hunting. Many times the pigs just kept coming back time and time again. Many times the deer would show up and eat at the feeder as well. I guess I don't smell like a human, or it's possib the pigs just aren't alarmed by the scent I left behind.

What evil lurks in the mind of a pig? Only the pig knows!

Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows! i enjoy hunting at night, cause i'm scared of me own shadow - the caveman ... Do know what lurks after eating a can of beans, makes a good cover scent while hog hunten... At night on them cool windy nights way back deep down in the hollows... Some times i find myself wondering about in circles when the wind swirles... As pappy once said: i don't always get a hog, but i have fun trying...
