I was just reading thru the thread on the pros and cons of fluting barrels. If weight reduction and rapid heat dispersion are the goal then would a carbon fiber barrel work? I've not read that much on carbon fiber barrels yet so maybe I'm thinking incorrectly! Baker

Christiansen arms has been making carbon fiber barrels for a while. The only down side I can see, I have never shot one, is they are really long.

I've never seen any type of competitor using one. I would like to know why.

They were basically a flash in the pan after being touted as the most radical change in rifles since smokeless powder.
There is much speculation as to why so I won't presume to know all the reasons. IMO their benefits were simply oversold and most folks don't want to look like they are carrying a long-barreled cannon around.
I learned long ago you can't reason someone out of something they don't reason themselves into.

It's more of a niche thing. It's for the guy who wants the lightest rifle possible without sacrificing much in accuracy. So, you're talking about sheep hunters, elk hunters, and the like. There's no advantage to them for the competitor, so they don't bother. In fact, the light weight can even be a drawback to many types of shooting.

Not many sheep/mountain hunters use them anymore. Hunters don't need to worry much about hot barrels and the same weight benefits can be gained in a much more compact package which is much more conducive to backpack hunting.
A few years ago when they were "hot" I would see several booths with them at the DSC and sheep shows. I don't recall even seeing one with them in the past couple of years.

Lots of money for probably the same performance as rebarreling with a light contour SS barrel. If weight was the primary concern, I would look at Kimber, Forbes, or 2 Tikkas for similar money.

I've got one on a Christensen Arms CA-10 in 308 and it is both the most accurate (2.25" groups at 300 yds) and lightest (7.8 lbs) AR10 rifle I've shot. The carbon adds stiffness and transfers heat from the barrel just like a bull barrel but without the weight. They will maintain accuracy with multiple shots unlike most pencil/light weight barrels.
I agree with Sneaky, their application is not for competitions but more of a niche where top accuracy, light weight, and ability to maintain accuracy with multiple shots is desired.
I was wrong...on anything technical. Fitz............. is right, ya know............

Y'all keep talking about the lack of need for a reduced barrel weight in competition have not tried to hit an IPSC, offhand at a quarter mile.

Would the lighter rifle help or hinder the rest of the shots on the course? Like Nog pointed out, the true benefits were overstated, so it never really caught on. They may offer a slight advantage in a few, specific situations, but overall, they didn't have a whole lot to offer, it seems.

Proof research was there at DSC this year, at least two booths wide. Pricey... Another guy had a CF barrel from another brand with a titanium action, in house aluminum stock with AR buttstock in 260Rem. 5.5lbs with 16" barrel. $1k/lb

A lighter barrel would not really hinder me anywhere. It would have the potential of witnessing impact or miss more difficult.

I personally use them on my 28 nosher and building a 6.5 in one. One reason you don't see many is the blanks run close to 900 bucks most guys don't want to spend that on a blank thats why you don't see them much. I use Benchmarks carbon barrels, there relatively new but I can get them in any contour and shape I want. they do not have to be long. They Heat treat them cut a #1 with a shoulder Crio them and then wrap them in carbon. They are marginally lighter but are stiffer than a 1 would be so for me my 28 nosler in the carbon has been a tack driver.
