Yesterday afternoon, I went to turn off the deer feeder for the year. There was barely a handful of corn left in the feeder anyway, so I just dumped the little bit that was left onto the ground. Later on I decided to sneak out to the blind with my crossbow to see if I could catch a hog or raccoon in the act of eating the leftover corn. About 10 minutes after I got to the blind, I ended up shooting a young boar hog; I guess he's been visiting the feeder the past couple of evenings since I shot my buck back on New Year's Eve. Luckily I got a good shot on him, and dropped him right under the feeder. Not too bad for about 10 minutes of hunting...at least I didn't have to stay up all night.

He tried to make sand angles as his last move. Congrats on the boar, gotta love that kind of timing on a hunt

Yes, it is quite sandy where I live. It's southeast of San Antonio, so it's well away from the rockiness of the Hill Country, but not quite into the clay-based soil that are in other areas. In fact, due to all the sand in the soil, I don't have any mesquite growing on my property at all...it's primarily made up of live oaks, post oaks and hickory trees. Beautiful hardwood bottom areas for hunting...it's my little piece of paradise. The only two downsides of living in sandy soil...gophers are absolutely everywhere, and sand gets into everything, so all my family's shoes stay in the garage, so we don't track sand into the house.

Sounds like a beautiful piece of land. With pigs around why don't you leave the feeder up year round? Congrats on the nice boar.
