I'm shooting a stock Remington 700 ADL synthetic stock (I think I bought it in 2002). It shoots pretty good. Around 1-1 1/2" groups with factory ammo and even smaller with handloads.
Just been thinking about tinkering with it to see if I could make it shoot even better. So my question is this. For those of you who have changed to a hogue stock did you notice an improvement in accuracy?
Not looking to spend a whole lot but I am wondering if I have been missing out by not having a stock with pillar bedding.

I bought one for my Ruger 77. I got the one with the aluminum bedding channel. I cannot positively say that the rifle was more accurate with that stock. I liked pretty much everything about it but the weight. Just too darn heavy, so the stock is now leaned in a corner of the barn. Been thinking about putting it in the classifieds.

Most people with a Hogue stock are trying to upgrade. Typical complaints are that the stock is not rigid enough when used with sling and/or bipod. I had one on an FN PBR and on a 10/22. Sold the FN but had I kept it I would have upgraded to a Mcmillan or Manners. Upgraded 10/22 from Hogue to Magpul stock and it is sooooooo much better.

The regular hogue stock is a little flimsy. That's usually the one people change to something else. The aluminum bedded one costs more and is rigid. Both are heavy.
It is far more important to be able to hit the target than it is to haggle over who makes a weapon or who pulls a trigger.

I'd be looking at bell and Carlson stocks if I was you. Or a Boyds laminate stock.

I have a hogue for my Model 70, it's the model with the full length aluminum block. I cannot say that it helped nor hurt accuracy. I would skip Hogue if accuracy is what you are chasing.

Thank you all. This is exactly what I needed to hear. I will look at the others that Y'all suggested. I've also been toying with the idea of finding a wood BDL Stock with bottom metal and converting to a BDL. I could then glass bed and free float.

My Howa 1500 in .223 (Heavy Barrel) came with a Hogue stock.
When I went over to a Boyds laminated stock, I noticed an improvement in accuracy. Less flyers.
When I glass-bedded the Boyds stock, another noticeable but smaller increase in accuracy was noted. The inletting on the Boyds stocks is generally very good. In a lot of cases, glass bedding is not strictly necessary.
Every little bit helps though, is how I look at it.
I would never spend money on a Hogue stock when I could have a Boyds instead for about the same outlay.
They look better, too.

Tried a couple of the Hogue stocks both improved accuracy over the Remington Tupperware stocks and made the rifles much more comfortable to shoot.

I've shot many clover leafs with my M700 .308 in a Hogue stock (factory ammo and reloads). And my M700 in .243 with a stock barrel/Hogue stock will do .5-.75 MOA all day long, also with factory ammo and reloads.
But they're hunting rifles and that's why they're dressed in Hogue stocks. Out in the woods, I get a much better grip on the rifle in the cold with gloves. This means I can control my weapon better in the sometimes awkward situations in which you can find yourself out in the woods. And the rubber coating makes the rifle quieter should I bump up against a fence post or something. And for a hunting rifle, this is much more important to me than an extra .25" of accuracy.
But like I said, the Hogue stocks haven't hurt my accuracy at all. Period.

A lot of the Hogue stocks are flexible at the forend. They will NOT shoot anything accurately with a bipod on them, and resting on the forend on sandbags can mess things up.

There are different types of the Hogue stocks, and not all are flexible. But many are.

I think as long as you stay with the one with the full aluminum chasis (sp?) you won't have the flex issues. I can't say that it improves accuracy any better than others but I believe the comfort of the rubberized coating gives me more confidence, which could help with accuracy.

Just an observation, if it will shoot small with handloads that tells me you may not have a stock problem. I have a very similar vintage ADL with the tupoware stock, its light sounds hollow and is in all practical purposes cheap, that said the gun has always shot incredibly well.
Do whatever you want, its your money, but are you replacing the stock to make it shoot better or because its cool and your bored?

I put one of the full aluminum models on an inaccurate Ruger M77 MkII. After I did a little glass bedding, it shot quite well. The bedding was a necessity, though.

I have no problem doing something because I like it, or its cool. Same reason I replaced the 4x4 decal on my truck with a carbon fiber decal. I like it. I like the benefits of an aftermarket stock too. Great cheek weld, ergonomics, but they are cool, and I like them.
