I have a Remington 700 in 270 and exploring option to turn it into 7mm mag. I know I need to rebarrel to 7mag through a Smith but what else is necessary, bolt face\new bolt? Anything else?

It would seem much simpler and cheaper to sell and re-buy. Is there a specific reason to perform a conversion?

Probably be much cheaper to sell or trade the 270 for a magnum rifle and then it's just a re-barrel plus any other bells and whistles you want.

Cheapest option you have with the .270 action is to keep the bolt, buy the 7mm barrel, and have the gunsmith chamber it for .280 or .280 A.I.

There is another option though, but dunno if it can be done with a 277 x 284 conversion. Theres a couple outfits on the west coast and one more in ummm ...Ohio I think that does barrel re boring. But it usually takes more than a .007 change in bore diameter though to clean up all the old rifleing, as I've been told.
Google Rifle Barrel reboring and see what you come up with. JES Reboring is who lots of folks use on 24HourCampfire, along with some others in Oregon, Idaho and California. Seems like I heard JES charging about $300 to do a cut rifling rebore to change calibers + some other options like custom twist rate & custom # of lands and grooves, rechambering & bolt face conversions from .473 to .532 for standard length magnums, cleaning up the lugs and bolt face yadda yadda.
Check out "Rifle Reboring by J E S"
Some day I'll look at doing one to take a 30'06 into a 338/06 or 9.3x62 in a rifle I intend to keep forever. Just an idea that's been done for years and years. Ron

Fireman JG, I've been looking at the 280AI. In a 26" barrel with 140-150 bullets will ballistics mirror 7mag? What about 6.5-06?

No way they can "mirror". The .280 has less case capacity, and therefore less muzzle velocity, than the 7 Rem Mag. However, it is awfully close to the 7 Rem Mag's MV, and you don't have a belt on the brass.
If someone gave me, or sold cheap a .270, I'd promptly turn it into a 280 A.I. load it with 168's and thoroughly enjoy it! Today I loaded ammo for a good friend. 7 Rem Mag with 168 gr. Bergers that leave at 3000 fps. If it were a .280 and making 2900 fps MV it would still be a badazz.
Look at the Nosler Accubond and Berger offerings in 7mm.

You edited while I was replying.
The 6.5-06 would also be a hotrod pushing 140's 2900 fps+ I suspect. But being the BC and bullet weight hound I am, I'd go 280 A.I. if it were mine.

On the 7mm ?
1:9"
If you felt like running a heavy 180 gr. it will do it. It can also run lighter bullets, fast, with some powder tuning. I suspect the 160-ish grain bullet will be the best performer, though.

6.5x284 Norma is a good alternative to wildcatting a 6.5-06.
The heavier 6.5 bullets are pretty long... The high sectional density there is part of why they have such a good reputation. With the 6.5x284 in a long action, you could seat them out as far as you decided to have the barrel throated for, and obtain better velocity than you might get from a 6.5-06.
Then there is the availability of factory brass - and even factory loads to consider. Lots of published loading data too.
As far as converting a 270 to 7mm mag goes, the advice about simply selling the 270 and buying a 7mm mag sounds most sensible to me.

I'm going to hijack this thread a little and ask some related questions I've had about a pipe dream rifle. I'm in a similar situation with a 30-06 I'm committed to keeping.
Assuming that one reloads so many more calibers are available, meaning cost of ammo is not the biggest concern: 1. What is the "best" long action cartridge? 2. Is there a noticeable performance difference between the 280 and 280ai? 3. I've always heard that long action calibers "need" a 24" barrel? True or untrue? If untrue, then what is about the min without sacrificing long range performance?
To me long is 600+.

1. Best for what? 2. More velocity, less case growth 3. I say true, as a general rule. Chad may have the answer to use a faster burning powder for a shorter barrel.

I left the criteria of best open ended intentionally. Just want to know what people's opinions were. While there is nothing wrong with 30-06 or my rifle, I thought it would be cool to have a more unique caliber.
I guess I don't u defeat do why the ai would generate more velocity, I assume u mean with the same powder, but does that mean the ai is more consistent than the regular?

A.I. removes the tapered case wall and makes it parrallel, holding more of the same powder. Shoulder angle seems that the ES would be lower than a standard case.
I'd load it with a 168 VLD and let it go as fast as it goes on the most consistent charge. I'd have to crunch numbers, but I'd bet $5 the .280 A.I. pushing a 168 VLD would deliver more down range velocity (500 yards +) than any .30-06 load, which translates to less wind drift and more delivered ft/lbs. As you up the BC on the 06' you loose MV, lowering those numbers down range.
7mm 168 gr. VLD Hunting, G1 .617
.30 cal 190 gr. VLD Hunting, G1 .570 .30 cal 210 gr. VLD Hunting, G1 .631
Question is, how fast will each bullet be leaving in each cartridge?

I found a 7mag. Anyone know of a quality, decent priced gunsmith in Austin area to blueprint action and square boltface stuff to accurize it?

Skip truing the action unless you are married to it until death do you part.
A cut rifled barrel chambered and threaded by a good smith to .0005". It'll shoot tiny with a hand load.

I'd like a barrel a bit heavier profile than the magnum contour it has now. What barrel brand and size should I buy?

www.bugholes.comBatlein, Kreiger, Obermeyer, Brux, Rock Creek. All are very good, find the caliber and contour you want in any one of those brands. Each manufacturer has a contour chart with dementions and weight of barrel. My 7 Rem Mag is a "Light Palma" contour, and I spiral fluted that to cut 1 pound of weight off of it. It was built to be carried in the mountains, and I did for a week. I also carry it mule deer hunting in canyon country. For a target rifle it does hold up for about ten shots, so it is a better hunting contour than target shooting contour. So it depends on what you're doing with the rifle as to what contour to buy. Just remember you don't have to have a thick barrel to have a tack driving rifle. The thicker the barrel the morr shots it will hold up before heating and stringing shots. But there are scores of thin barreled rifles that will shoot great for three rounds before stringing. Load development comes into play big time on the thin and/ or long barrel. And a 7 Rem Mag needs a 26" barrel in my opinion, to burn the big load of H-Retumbo the case is holding.

Rifle only is less than 10. Havn't weighed that one yet. Get you a Manners MCS-EH1 if you want a vertical grip, crazy light weight stock. Had that been invinted when I built mine, it is what I would have right now. I have a Manners T-4, which is significantly heavier. 26 oz. verus 4 pounds.

Cheapest option you have with the .270 action is to keep the bolt, buy the 7mm barrel, and have the gunsmith chamber it for .280 or .280 A.I. This is what I would do. I would pick the 280AI and run RL 26 I recently had a 280ai built off a tikka 270 (with a little guidance from JGFireman). I put a 7mm Bartlein barrel on it and had gunsmith chambered it in 280ai. I went with a heavy sporter contour (3b) and had it fluted (by Horizon Firearms - thanks Derrick!) to save on weight. Rem light varmint contour also a good option. I went with 25" on barrel length, but 26" will net you about 50 fps more if you are trying to get as close to 7RM velocities. Let me just say that this thing is a shooter!
