Nice tummy tattoo, RG. Can't help but pick on it a little bit. No ragrets yo! Know whut I'm sayin? Yeah but I love this picture. I have thought of photoshopping the tattoo out. My daughters are big enough to ask questions about stuff like this. I didn't "ragret" it until that point. I would hate for one of the girls to bring home a tattoed thug. I never thought of myself as one, though. You can't tell a book by it's cover I guess would apply. At least it doesn't say "thug life"

You are more what the yuppie hunters ought to be in my opinion.
Regarding the minivan, I have a perfectly good 4x4 truck. Some places I go it's necessary, others not at all. I could hunt solely on places that don't need it and sell it. Doesn't matter. Just a couple years ago I arrived at a lease and a ranch hand asked why I don't drive back to my blinds vs parking up front and hoofing it. My response: two reasons, 1) I enjoy the outdoors so making the hike is a part of why I'm there; 2) the hike on foot doesn't take much longer than driving but is much less hassle than dealing with multiple gates and the cattle that want to get through them.
I don't have fancy equipment and likely am less successful than many others here but, to me, that doesn't matter. Don't get caught up in comparisons. You do what you can and what you want. That approach will be more enjoyable than thinking about the overpriced cooler, the 4x4 you don't need, a European scope with the four digit price tag that doesn't appear any different than a Chinese-made "budget" model, and whatever the latest camo with scent control is. My grandfathers didn't have a single piece of camo.
Hunt on.
Cheers.
My botnet is bigger than yours.

I have the igloo cooler, 04 explorer with a blood stain in the back from my buck cuz I don't own a pickup truck. (Not yet anyway) I get my camo at Walmart and academy after season on clearance. This is only my second year to hunt and I love sporting head to toe camo even when I'm in the blind. Just makes the moment feel right! I shot my first deer with a borrowed 30-06. The second one with my son's 7mm-08 with a $50 Simmons scope. I own a 30-30 but haven't put a scope on it yet. Only reason I have a place to hunt is because we rent a house on 120 acres of family land. I enjoy the hell out of though and that's all that matters. My son and I can bond better being outdoors rather than sitting in front of a video game console. Doesn't matter how you do it or what kind of equipment you use as long as it makes you happy. I can't sit here and say that if I had a lot of money I wouldn't have a yeti or a big pickup, but right now I'm good to go just the way I am!

Idk what I am I guess.
Have a nice 4wd truck A nice rifle in a fancy stock, just bought a nice new scope with target turrets today Have a fair bit of cano (all of it from Walmart) Hunt from a homemade wooden quad pod or a brush blind My wife eats every bit of wild animal I bring home And I hunt on 100 acres of family land for free
But guys like me take a little offense to the original post, when you somehow make yourself sound better than the guy who has a good enough job to buy some toys.

What few deer I've shot is with a pawn shop special rifle with a Tasco scope. I started with an old blue handkerchief wrapped around my face for camo. Now I've graduated to a free camo shirt someone gave me. Cheap is the new cool.

I didn't own a 4x4 until I was 41 years old; I still don't play with it and still avoid mud like I did with a 4x2.
My first deer rifle was a borrowed 03A3 Springfield. I finally bought a Marlin 3030, then a remington 742 .
I didn't even have a backpack, or anything to put into one. Wore a hunting knife on my belt. Didn't own camo for many years, but now I do wear it. Especially when not hunting from a blind.

It kills me how many people here get so worked up and judgmental over whether or not someone wears camo. I wear camo sometimes when it's not needed, but not because I think it's doing anything. I buy camo clothes for when I hunt from a tripod. I'm not buying a complete collection of non-camo clothes specifically for hunting. I layer my clothes when it's cold, so the layer that ends up on top just depends on the temperature. When I'm hunting in a box blind the top layer may be something camo, my black zippered hoodie, my green coat, or whatever. There's really no more thought put into than that and I don't care if the top layer is camo or not. I guess around here that makes me "that guy".

No fancy 4x4 truck (like the ones in the hunting rigs) not even close to my p/u, black jeans, black shirt, Carhart jacket, hat(a gift), rifle my dad bought me in 1965 (Winchester 30-06). I'm a regular guy - who cares?

Maybe you shouldn't pass judgment on other hunters when you just shot your first deer. Congratulations on that, a first deer is a huge accomplishment. But while I hope your point in this was to simply say you were about to get it done with the bare essentials, it came off as you saying you were a better hunter than the guys who can afford the things that I'd imagine, you would be happy to have if you were able to right now.

Right on, man. If i had the expendable income, I'd probably have several custom rifles. There is at least a scope upgrade in the near future for me, for sure. I would love to have a .30-378 Weatherby in walnut. I probably wouldn't even hunt with it much if I had one. I imagine it's not fun to shoot. And I don't even know enough about top end optics to tell you what kind of scope I'd put on that. Until i became active on this forum, Leupold MKIV was top-end to me. I'd love a custom long range rig, too. In something a little more easy on the shoulder... maybe a .243 with a fast twist. Maybe a sweet custom handmade bow, too. And a lot of other things. And like I said before, if I had land I'd have me a feeder on it and whatever else I could afford to give the animals a reason to cross my fence. But land/lease or not, I'd probably still itch to hunt public land, especially if it was convenient enough of to get to. Nothing wrong with doing what you can to better the odds, but you probably like to have a hard hunt too. Plenty of dudes will spend 25 grand on the hunt of a lifetime, that involves a whole lot of hard work with no promises. The same dudes will put out a feeder or even hunt a high fence ranch at times. Why can't you have both worlds, if you can afford it? This has been my stance from the beginning. I never judged anyone on how they hunt. You better believe for my daughters first deer hunts, i will have a blind, a feeder, and hot cocoa by God! That said, you won't catch me drinking startbucks or using a yeti... unless mandated by my wife... I never intended to put anyone off with this thread...

No Worries Regular Guy! Some people don't take the time to actually READ the post. Or the other posts that follow to get some sense of the intent, and they are probably drama queens themselves as they don't pay much attention to anything else, just what they want to spout off about. You sound like a guy I would take hunting for your child's 1st hunt on my lease if you didn't have a blind, feeder. You'll have to provide your own hot cocoa though. Good Luck

I think most of us started off that way. I am older now and have some more disposable income than I did then. My only hobby is shooting and hunting. (I also like to be comfortable) The days of me having to reuse the same aluminum arrow are over. thank God. Glad your our there hunting but one is no better than the next. I break down a little like this. Own several Yeti coolers don't like the taste of starbucks prefer mcdonalds coffee (also want to order saying small medium and large etc) own a 4x4 truck shoot a custom rifle with a great scope Dont usually wear camo for deer (generally sitting in a box it doesnt make sense) Like a big comfortable insulated stand with solar charged battery for my Ipad. I video more than I hunt now however I have let several of my brothers kids shoot management bucks. we all split up the meat Good luck this next year we all started somewhere it will be fun in 30 years to look back and think about where you were then vs now.

I'm cool with everything but the minivan thing. No way one of those is getting in my driveway unless it's someone just pulling in to turn around. Even then I think I'd have a problem with it. My first deer in TX was taken to the processor on the hood of my Lexus sedan. Thought that the processor was going to stroke out from laughing so hard when I pulled into the parking lot. He told me to hurry up and get around back before anyone saw me. By the time I got there his wife was waiting with the camera to take pictures. Must have had 20 people pull up along side me on the highway taking pictures with their phones. To the OP, that drag was about 400 yards, all up hill. I was so blown out when I got there that I couldn't get it on the trunk so I had to put it on the hood.

I must be "trans-hunter". I fall into the first category but prefer to hunt with those in the other category.
