I think any living animal that gets snake bit will probably be affected by it.

effects deer the same as a horse. nose is most common area to get bit, then leg would be second. area bit will swell, some live to see another day, some don't.

I do not think a fatal bite happens often. I had a friend that had a place NW of Richland Springs and it had plenty of rattlesnakes. I hunted the place for years and the only remains that I ever found were killed by people and finished off by cats. Snakes avoid deer. Deer will stomp them to pieces. There is not lot of flesh on the lower leg of a deer for snake to penetrate.

I have only seen one deer that I thought was snake bit. It was a buck and he appeared to have been hit in the brisket in front of the shoulders. He had what looked like two fang marks/holes there. He had a wound that took almost 2 yrs to cover over. Stayed open and drained for most of that time. It did not kill him but it did effect his antler growth for those two years.

The only animal that absolutely won't get bit by snakes are black panthers....the snakes can't see them. People, on the other hand, are especially susceptable because people are afraid of them....snakes can smell the hormones that people put off when they are scared. Therefore the more you are afraid of snakes, the more the snakes come after you. Those of you who are really afraid of snakes just attract them, that's all.

I'm sure they do....I did see a doe stomp the life out of a rattlesnake once....made enough of an impression on me as to not ever want to have a doe come after me.....

I was bow hunting and had a doe start stomping and carrying on. Couldn't figure out what was going on until I heard the buzz. She jumped straight in the air and came down with a thump. Swear I could feel the vibration in my stand. She rared and came down hoof to ground in a flurry and finally jumped back. She went around the other side and started eating again. Wild

We watched a cull buck do nothing antler-wise for two seasons. This was his third season with the same antler configuration and he never put on any weight compared to our other bucks in the same age class - he dressed out at 85#s.
After he was killed, it was discovered he was missing the lower quarter of his back right leg. Suppose it could have been a rattlesnake bite when he was a fawn - we just attributed to a growth defect until now.

I know of a breeder buck that got bitten by a snake and never recovered and had to be put down. Owner lost a 5 figure investment from what I understand.

I was watching a 10 point walking through some brush in East Texas heading for a clearing when he suddenly jumped straight up in the air, turned around, and ran back the way he came. He was hollering the whole time. I listened to him for about 30 seconds going back through the woods. I was completely dumbfounded. After a few minutes I went over to where he was and after some searching I found a 3 foot rattle snake. Mystery solved.

ON a Llano county lease I was on one of the members popped a cull-buck we called 'profile' (his profile looked like one heck of a good buck, facing you he was only 9" wide). When we were looking at the deer in camp we noticed one jaw was really swollen and had to small fang-holes in the middle of the swelling. Other than that he was a healthy deer and was shot eating corn under a feeder.

I read a huge article not too long ago that said that people would dig these stones out of deer that have some kind of healing properties. The stone was supposed to be where the deer was snake bit. I wish I could find the article
