Growing up in east TX, I had heard about "timber" or "canebrake" rattlers all my life. Despite roaming the woods constantly during my entire youth, I never saw one. Since I bought my Houston county place in 2004, I have encountered several - all over 4' long (one just shy of 5'). They are perfectly camouflaged and will rattle one time - only if you almost step on them. They are extremely reclusive and very non-aggressive. Their poison is one of the most potent of the American pit vipers. Here one I coaxed out into the pasture to make a pic - it would have been near impossible to see him in a pic if I had taken it while he was still in the woods. Note his non-aggressive demeanor. All they do is try to get away. The only way I have been able to get one in an aggressive "strike" posture is by poking it with a (long) stick or limb - and that is only for a brief second or two. They are protected by law as a threatened species.

I've seen a lot of them along the Neches over the years from Diboll down to the Spurger area. The juvenile ones have this bad habit of climbing switch cane and ending up on your 4wheeler when you drive through it.
And bigger ones crawling up in your 4wheeler on cool mornings to get some warmth off the motor...hate those things.

I have handled many, many timbers around Freestone county....only had one that was a little aggressive....milky eyes and almost ready to shed....otherwise I figure it would have been as passive as all the others....

Well I guess we know who is going snake boot shopping.
And you really need to watch for the copperheads and cottonmouths. Especially with how wet everything in E tex has been they are constantly moving.

There is a video on YouTube of a timber rattler ambushing a squirrel that is on a stump/post. It is one of the coolest things I have seen.

Yeah copperheads and cottonmouths are much more of a concern to me than timber rattlers.

Yeah copperheads and cottonmouths are much more of a concern to me than timber rattlers. This! In 13 years of running around East Texas, all on the same 1300 acres, I only saw 1 timber rattler and that was earlier this year. It's the cotton mouths and copperheads that I would see on every trip. And it was the cotton mouth that bit me

I've had my land just North of Tyler for almost 14 years and have never seen a rattle snake. I'm told they are around, so I figure it's just a matter of time until I see one. I've seen dozens and dozens of copper heads and water mocosins, plus more rat snakes then those other two combined. I've only seen one bright green colored snake that I don't know what it was, and a few garter snakes. Since there is that one green one that I've only seen once, I'm sure there are others that I have never seen as well. Because I'm afraid of snakes, I keep my trails mowed. I always watch for them while walking anywhere, and I always expect one to be under anything that I pick up. Sometimes there really is one under it too!!!!

The timbers are pretty docile and a easy going snake... can be a bit to easy going because they wont rattle until your right on top of them.... they live in the tree canopy eating tree rats and what not until they get huge so you will hardly see them.. when you do it will be a good size.. just be mindful of sheets of tin laying around this time of year or timber piles especially in the piney woods were tree company's leave the pine tips in nice perfect snake piles...
I don't worry bout them much though.. its the copperheads youll need to be on the lookout for.. they are thick

So, it's important to note one can fall out of the trees at any time...so watch the ground and watch straight up in the trees.

Canebrake and pygmy rattler can occur anywhere in Deep East Texas, but in reality are pretty spotty.
I spend a LOT of time in the woods and in the 30+ years I've been here have never encountered a Canebrake.
Conversely, friends that live near Etoile (near the Angelina National Forest) and friends that live between Ratcliff Texas and Applesprings (Davy Crockett National Forest) see them not infrequently.
All agree...they are a non-aggressive snake. One of the most beautifully marked snakes IMO.
Spartans ask not...how many, but where!
