So my deer rifle is my trusty old marlin lever action 3030. Got an old Simmons scope (3x9) on it and it's got a ton of sentimental value. It's always put it where I want it, but it is a bit cumbersome for me. Friend of ours has offered to sell us his Ruger scout (left handed! Woohoo!) with a 4x12 Leupold rifleman. It definitely feels more compact (though it really is just a hair shorter and about the same weight, just seems to "come up" right )and I'm liking the scope a lot. Offered a pretty good deal on it plus $$ of in the form of a trade of our Foxpro.
Thoughts on the Scout? Reliable? I dink around with my 22-250 and 223 for varmints and hogs but have always been rigid about my deer rifle (it belonged to my papaw who is very sick with cancer. He loves seeing photos of deer I've taken with his old rifle as he can't really hunt anymore. It's also the gun I learned to shoot with.) what do y'all think about moving to a 308 from a 3030? Big change or no?
Appreciate it, y'all!

It is a step up, you will get longer range availability, more kick, larger game IMO (maybe not others opinion), more ammo variations. I will be interested in others report.

Ahh, didn't even think about the ammo variety! Right now I use the Hornady Leverlution rounds. It is also noteworthy we are set up to reload .308...

Zero experience with the Scout, but not a stranger to Ruger. They are built hell for stout, and have never had one fail.
Pretty sure you won't be disappointed. I'd jump on it. Beautiful rifle sir.

Thanks for the input, Janie! Never had a Ruger myself so good to get some feedback. I'm female, but I know what you meant I'm partial to the look myself. Looks really slick! I'm borrowing it to put a few rounds through before I commit to purchase. Think I'll do that tomorrow.

I'm female, but I know what you meant I am so sorry! Tend to forget there are more females here, than just Pink and myself. Please accept my apology and then please let us know how you enjoy that Ruger.

I've got the M77 stock in 203. Built like a tank. The only other adjustment you might consider is the addition of the external magazine. It's loud and requires more attention when noise discipline is critical.

I had one for a while. It was ok, accurate enough for what it was. Took a couple of good hogs with it between 100 and 250 yards with 150 grain Remington Core-Lokts. Handled nicely for a short rifle, though I never really liked the stock trigger. Not the smoothest action either, pretty easy to bind up in a rush. Good extraction and ejection. To me at the time it was just a bit pricey for the platform you get. Ended up trading it off and getting a T3. I'm happy now.

The binding sounds like a magazine problem. I have 5 Hawkeyes with bottom metal and they are 100% reliable. They are control feed so it's impossible to get excited and short stroke. I agree there are smoother actions but nothing more reliable or rugged.

30-30 will do just about everything most folks are capable of doing. I don't like the forward mount scopes, so I wouldn't buy that rifle. A regular Ruger in .308, however, I would have no issues with.

I agree there are smoother actions but nothing more reliable or rugged. Nope. Had several of the available different types of magazines, they all operated as designed. Mauser-type action also worked as it should and was rugged and reliable, I never mentioned or had a short-stroke issue. The bolt operation, specifically opening and closing the bolt quickly was what I was talking about. More side to side axial play present than what I'm used to I suppose. A comparison of controlled round feed rifles, like a Winchester Model 70 vs. the Ruger action, is a night and day proposition. The Winchester is light years smoother and has a better factory trigger. YMMV. I still have my Model 70. M77 action is a good one, though. It's all what you are used to, I guess.

If your dad can't get out and loves knowing that you are taking game with his rifle, I would stick with that, no matter what. I'm sure it makes him proud.

I was thinking the scout only had forward-mount capability.

It does have forward mount capability. I shot one this week on a hunt out west. Have had several M77s and M77 MKII's. I liked them. I did not like the scout at all. IMO way better options out there for same $ than that one.

Thanks for all the feedback, y'all. I appreciate it! Seems like there's a lot of mixed opinions on it.
Iammr2, that's always been my hesitation. The sicker my papaw gets the more I hesitate to change... I've never shot a buck with anything else.
I am partial to the tikka T3 compact myself but we are being offered a good deal by a friend with bartering involved also. Decisions, decisions... Maybe I shouldn't have gotten a coon mounted and saved that extra $$! Haha.
And Janie, no need for an apology. I'm gonna get the sucker sighted in and will report back!

My mileage doesn't vary when it comes to Rugers vs Winchesters out of the box. Ruger doesn't polished their actions, and yes even their improved trigger is not as good as my Winchester Featherweight. I sometimes forget the main Ruger I hunt with and shoot is one that had a trigger job and it's actioned polished.

I'm sure most of y'all will call me crazy, but my Ruger 77 Mk. II is by far the smoothest action I've seen. I've seen many others that are rough though. Mine was bought in 1995 and I have a friend with one he got about then as well. Maybe they polished them back then? idk

You aren't crazy. The stainless mini-14 used to have a nice bead blasted finish. The stainless Mini 30 my friend bought 2 years ago has the finish of a galvanized fence post.

Now you've got me wondering about a galvanized finish on a rifle. - Weatherproof and non-glare, if nothing else!
I once saw a Harley done up in galvanize and it looked better than it sounds like it would.
On a galvanized rifle, the stock would have to be unfinished laminate, blow-torched and then bleached for that "barn wood" look.
