Anyone have one? Im thinking about building one just to have something different. I had a 300blk for awhile but just got bored with it once they became mainstream. I figure 458 would be fun and probably not a bad HD gun if we're talking SBR
I reload so not worried about price and availability of ammo. Id probably buy 100rds then just reload the brass.

The 9 round capacity is what turns me away most. If that isnt a problem, go for it. It has some impressive energy on target for sure.

I had one for 3 or 4 years. It's a fun cartridge to shoot, but it is expensive to shoot. I hand load for everything I shoot, and never fired a single round of factory ammo out of mine. I shot 300,325,350,and 405 grain bullets out of mine. It shot great, but those heavy bullets drop like crazy after 100 yards. The 458 SOCOM is a hog stopper, it's like hitting them with a 20lb sledgehammer. I gave up on it because of the limited shooting range of the cartridge, my 260 Remington DPMS will do anything the 458 will do, and do it a whole lot farther.

I would like one, but for the cost of an upper you can nearly buy a full .308 rifle.
The secret to a long life is to try not to shorten it.

I can't for the life of me remember the name of it, but I have been reading recently about a new 358 AR round that sounds interesting.
As to magazine capacity for the 458 socom, I would not really be concerned about that. It has enough power so that the "spray and pray" system is really a moot point. At reasonable ranges, its hard to imagine a single round not doing the job. It would have to be a pretty tough, determined critter to require two.
With the price and recoil impulse of the ammunition, it's hard to imagine very many 458 socom owners emptying the magazine as fast as they can, just for giggles. What I have heard most about is guys using it as a hunting round.
Kind regards, charlesb

I would bet at distances of less than 25 yards they would be great At reasonable ranges, its hard to imagine a single round not doing the job. It would have to be a pretty tough, determined critter to require two.

It's not really a practical round. And I love it!

Spray and pray doesn't sound very sportsmanly

Spray and pray doesn't sound very sportsmanly It generally occurs at the shooting range. I see a lot of it with the AR and AK owners, especially when they shoot at the steel targets. With some of those AK's in particular, that was their best bet for getting the steel to ring. There are some AR owners whose theory is that several hits from a .223 on a pig adds up to being as good as one hit from a .308. If the bullets are going where they are supposed to, it may be that they are right. - Not my style though, I'm a semi-reformed big-bore fan. With me, the AR's are a lot like the M1A... I played around with them for a few months but after that, I was ready to move on to something else. An AR in 458 socom sounds a lot more interesting to me than an AR in .223.

Yes, I have one. Have it owned it for quite a while now and use it extensively for Hogs and sometimes for deer. If you handload (and I suggest you do) then you have available to you...anything from a 100 gr. bullet (yes 100) up to 600 grain bullets that you can shoot from it. The recoil of the 458 SOCOM is really nothing until you get to the 400+ grain bullets, and then it's like shooting a shotgun with slugs. It's a great short range gun,and a perfect match for hunting hogs, deer, bison, elk, moose, etc at ranges under 150 yards. Accuracy is fantastic with most bullets, and loading/shooting ammo that shoots under moa is very easy to accomplish. The only negative to loading/shooting the 458 SOCOM is the lack of published load data from the bullet and powder manufacture's. You can find load data for it on several 458 forum sites, but you still need to be cautious when loading for it. It is a low pressure round, and you will show pressure signs on the brass pretty quickly when you start loading hot rounds. Charles,It's really not hard to imagine 458 owners doing magazine dumps. It's actually fun as hell to do it!

If I had known about this one I might have sprung for it before purchasing another RRA .223/5.56 upper. I've thought I might like a .458 for shooting hogs from the blind, but after the ho-hum reviews here in this thread maybe I won't think much about it any more.

If supressors in 458 weren't so damned expensive I would get a 458 sbr upper. My buddy has one and it is a hog hammer.
Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.

Never shot a 458. I have shot a buddy's 50 beowulf several times. That thing is LOUD. I've thought about getting one of the big bores for a pig gun. He bought a Bower's suppressor for the beowulf and it tamed the volume and the recoil a lot. And the Bower's suppressor is not too bad of a price.
It is far more important to be able to hit the target than it is to haggle over who makes a weapon or who pulls a trigger.
