The 3 SSS's applies here. Since he denies his dog is doing it. He shouldn't come looking for it on your property.

Killing a mans dog would be last resort with me. Show him the pics and see where that goes.

Yes, show him the pics and discuss it with him. If a reasonable approach won't work, then maybe the dog will disappear someday.

I get a short fuse when somebodies dog causes issues with other people or animals. The dog knows no difference - their owner Should know the difference. Similar to a neighbor allowing their dog or dogs to bark all night in their backyards keeping the neighborhood awake. As rude as it gets IMO - and I am amazed at how many people will defend "their right" to let their dogs disturb everyone around then -

We had one camped out at our place one year, met him on the trail and he started growling at me.

And then "bang", right?

Used to be, if you were in sheep and goat country, and a dog started chasing stuff, it was understood by all neighbors that that dog would be shot. I warned the kids that if our defiant beagle (Whiskey River Thunder) ever did that, it could happen. Almost did a couple of times, but I chased her sorry butt down before she really got going.

Agreed.

Had it happen a couple of times. A couple of leases ago we had the same thing going on. Talked to the neighbor and they took care of it. Until I went back in the Spring to chase thunder chickens. I was setup with my son right off the roost with a strutter and a few hen decoys. I guess they looked pretty good cuz the dog ran up to 30 yards and froze looking at them. After a while I had to shoo him off, but it ruined that hunt.

We had that problem, and we saw the dog chasing deer through a pasture several times. Talked to the neighbor 6 times, then told him enough was enough the 7th. He understood. He said any dog was fair game except their white one(his kids favorite). I really didn't want to shoot someones dog but after the second time I saw it chasing deer after we had talked I rifle I would make sure you get permission before you sling lead though.

I'd be worried about showing pictures and then all the sudden it "disappeared".. I wonder where he'll come looking?

It's a sticky situation. For sure. Everyone has different ideas about how to handle it. Mostly depending on where they hail from.

yeah and last year too but this year it seems the dog has gotten worse.....during bow season we were riding around filling feeders and saw him and my brother popped of a couple shots in the dogs direction with his 9mm...not intedning to hit him just scare him and the first shot the dog barely flinched..second shot he trotted off...Season is getting close to being over so maybe we can tough it out....or maybe one day there wont be a dog to worry about... slinger

You don't really have a dog problem, you have an owner problem.

I get where you're coming from. I should say that one of my dogs chase deer but I've come to the conclusion that she's just playing with them. First our land is fenced and we own it so she's not leaving to bother anyone else and we keep both dogs locked during prime hunting hours. Second the only time she chase deer is to keep them away from the feeder we have about 100 yards from our cabin which we don't hunt. We are out there regularly year round and there are deer that will hit this feeder regularly. She will start to chase them and they will trot away but when she turns around they will walk back to the feeder right behind her. If I ever caught her killing deer it would be a different story but she sticks to killing foxes and raccoons and I'm good with that.

Had a pack of wild dogs one year in Callahan county. They caused problems all around our area on multiple leases. Problem got solved!

I talked to out land owner and the gw informed him if its chasing deer to kill em and call him if it has a tag. The dog owner can be fined he said... So i ran into a gw from another city and he said that is was true and backed it up.. Anyone else heard this?

My cousin was talking about something similar last week he has a bunch of longhorn and a group of pit bulls got loose and attacked a calf when he saw that he had no choice but to shoot it he said he's had to shoot a couple lately it's not something he wants to do but something he has to. In your case I would try to catch the dog and return it tell the owner if it shows agian it will be put down but if it is agressive with you shoot it exspecially if any kids are in the area.

I have always heard the opposite, but truly don't know the answer. My understanding is that deer are not considered livestock and therefore it is illegal to shoot a dog for chasing a deer. It is not illegal to shoot a dog that is chasing livestock though or one that is aggressive towards a human.

Quote:
(Penal Code 42.09 Animal Cruelty). Any person who shoots a non-livestock animal, which includes any stray or feral cat or dog, and a wild living creature previously captured, can be charged with a felony offense. Penal Code 42.092 of the State of Texas law states that a person must have the owner’s consent to kill the animal (exceptions to prosecution are provided in Section 42.092(e)(1)). It is clear that a “stray” dog or cat either has no owner or that the person who shoots the animal did not get the owner’s consent.

Then there is this...

Quote:
(f) It is an exception to the application of this section that the conduct engaged in by the actor is a generally accepted and otherwise lawful:
(1) form of conduct occurring solely for the purpose of or in support of:
(A) fishing, hunting, or trapping; or
(B) wildlife management, wildlife or depredation control, or shooting preserve practices as regulated by state and federal law; or
(2) animal husbandry or agriculture practice involving livestock animals.
(g) This section does not create a civil cause of action for damages or enforcement of the section.

Anyone with dogs running loose in the country should know the risks to their dog/dogs
