Did a search and did not find a thread about preferred shotgun ammo for hogs.
What do those who shoot shotguns for hogs consider the preferred ammo?
I have a few different brands I purchased but was wondering what the more experienced shotgun hog hunters use?
Thanks

The problem with your search is most experienced hog hunters don't use a shotgun.

I have successfully used slugs in my 12 gauge shotguns on hogs out to about 30-40 yards. Head and neck shots are best. For cleaning up hog traps with piglets in them, I'll use 00 buck on the little fellers and switch to slugs for the adults. Rifles (.243 and above in caliber)and "big boy" hand guns are my preferred firearms for the piggies.

Lots of people use shotguns, mainly like mikei said, in the 30-40 yard range. Slugs can be good out to 75 yards.
I use Federal 00 buck on average sized hogs to good effect. Always carry slugs for larger, if I need them. Was using Remington Sluggers but found them shooting very high in my gun. Tried Federals and they are better but not quite there. Many speak highly of Brenneke. Looking for them now to try them. Different ammo works differently in individual guns. You'll just need to find what works for yours.

I work with a guy who uses 12 gage hog wild specialty rounds. They only come in 12 guage mag and super mag. Mags have two balls with spacer and super mags have 3 balls with spacers. He has had some success with the mags. Pretty darned expensive, I have no idea if they are better than slugs. I did a search on the Internet and found some.
Thank You Robert

I use either 00 only or 00/slug/00/slug if i think i may have to go beyond 50 yds. I carry the 870 pretty much every time i am on the property, snakes (10 cottonmouth so far have met up with the 870) are main reason but i do scare a pig now and then and rifle would just be too wreckless for hurry up shots here.

I have a slug gun fully rifled barrel and scope, shooting Hornady 300gr SST slug at 2000fps.. I'm guessing that will kill a hog well over 30-40 yards.

That ^ used to use that exact combo with a popup blind and a light on full moon or near full moon nights . shot a 200 lb boar through the lungs with my rifle barreled 870 and a 300 grain SST at about 65 yds a few years ago. Full pass through. He ran 10-15 yds and dropped. good blood trail...
I havent been successful with buck shot. my dad shot a sow that had been wounded the night before from 40 yds twice with copper plated flight control buck shot before he had to finish her off with a brenneke slug about 4 months ago.

Fast paced gregarious society forgets the healing power of solitude. It's worked thousands of years. Casting a line/gazing into a campfire/sitting in a blind after a long week is medicine for the soul. The serenity and peacefulness of it all is majestic.

a slug gun fully rifled barrel, will kill a hog well over 30-40 yards. its kinda like early smooth bore muzzleloaders... With each shot, fowling makes it tougher ta re-load.. They cut groves in barrels for easier re-loading, & it pud a spin on acrracy... Tis twist in barrel rather than groves on bullet... i'm not an expert.... Always good ta get second or third opinion, as pappy once said: some are fresher opinions ...

Slugs for anything with size buckshot if fine for 50 pounders but if you run into an adult boar much less a big boar buckshot is going to be very lackluster. If you have not seen video linked below it may change your mind about buckshot. Its not the only hog I have seen take multiple hits from buckshot and live but its the only one I have on film. http://youtu.be/aEpJQvj_W3c

He has had some success with the mags. Pretty darned expensive, I have no idea if they are better than slugs. I did a search on the Internet and found some. Those rounds are over priced JUNK. They contain Zink balls which are less dense than lead. I was going to buy some as lead is not allowed waterfowl hunting. After researching the rounds, I think not. Looks like the pistol will be my only choice while hunting waterfowl. I did shoot 3different hogs with steel #4 on teal opener this year. For Big game, I am strictly a handgun hunter. I've never had a hog shrug off a properly placed home cast rcbs 44-240-KT. Trapped hogs get the Walther p22. No matter the size. I cast buckshot and handload 9 OO shot in a 2 3/4 hull. Stumpy resides under the back seat and has taken his fair share.

Guess I'm not an experienced hog hunter, but # 4 buck will roll them up and can hit more running with that than some one with an AR out to 60 yds.

If they're very big, slugs for sure.

I like sabot slugs from a rifled barrel. They will drop the biggest hog out well past 100 yards. They fold up like it's laundry day.
