"We would to come, but Dana is in heat. We will be keeping her locked up until the beginning of December. The weather is looking great right now. Have a great trip."
The above was a reply to an invitation for a quail hunt. How long to you generally hold them out of group hunts?

Daisy is 10 now. She has never missed a hunt because of being in heat, nor have any of the other girl dogs I have or have had. I hunt girls only if I have to. Then boys only next round.
Haven't had it in years but never spit any out. I am a sucker for happy endings and strapped cowboys.

Daisy cant go, I cant go. No if's ands or buts about it. I am not hunting with someone that isn't willing to let the dogs take turns. I would stay home or find somewhere else to go.

Off topic with bird dogs but same concept. When I was invited to run my black mouths with other dogs I had to be sure if there was a female in heat I didn't take a male or have a female in heat while they wanted to run their males. It's not fair for the males cause it takes their minds off hunting... I know everyone knows that, but had to say it...

Your replies were non responsive. The question was how long do you hold them out on group hunts?

We all have to deal with it every year.

Even though they are in heat for that long, they are only receptive for a short time. You have about 10 days to keep them home, if your worried. The rest of the time run them last. A easy fix would be to just have Dana's owner show up later than the rest of the group, and then run her with other females.
Shopping with your husband is like hunting with the game warden. Experience is what you get, when you didn't get what you wanted.

A little story; I was on a quail lease up in Concho county. We had a nice camphouse and decent quail numbers. I went up with my friend Chuck with my two spayed female pointers. Chuck had a male GSP named Pete. Pete was out of field trial stock with national potential. We were using his trailer which I've shown several times on this forum. A Friend named Eric brought his female GSP which was in heat. Chuck and I had our dogs chained to his trailer. His female came along and backed up to the trailer. They were tied up in a few seconds. The female had a wonderful litter of pups.

I had 2 females, and 1 male ( all intact) in my house for 3 years with no litters. It can be done, but you better be hyper vigilant.

This is good. Like on TBH where a guy was complaining about wives at the deer lease . . .

How do you know when that 10 day cycle is during the 5 weeks Its the estrus stage of the cycle. The discharge changes to a lighter color, and the girls are just are just as interested in mating, as the boys. Mine are quite mean towards male suitors until they hit this stage of the cycle.

Let me ask this another way. How long to you keep the female which is in heat separated from the male? Let me ask this another way. How long to you keep the female which is in heat separated from the male? Right or wrong, I have always used the 21 day rule. My Dad ( R.I.P.) always taught that the heat cycle was 1 week coming in, 1 week to stand, and 1 week going out.
