I have been very disappointed with the performance of my 300 blk against hogs. Thinking about changing calibers. I want to stick with the AR platform and will continue to use my 30 cal suppressor. Any recommendations on caliber and manufacturer?
Thanks
Lou

Are you shooting super or subsonic ammo currently? Also, where are you shooting the pigs (neck, head or vitals)?
I just ordered a .300 blackout for pigs and was just curios about your experience.

.25-45 Sharps will work, but it won't be as quiet as .300 blk with subs.

I like my Blackouts, I have 2. 16" and a 10" SBR, but my go to AR is a 6.5 Grendel. And if I need the big hammer I have a .50 Beowulf. But I still enjoy hunting with the Blackout, suppressed the most!

Good questions As far as AR caliber choices the 300BO is great for subsonic rounds, but for hunting I want one with more thump than it offers. For more thump and range 6.5 Grendel is hard to beat.

Unfortunately, you are finding out what a lot of other folks, myself included, did about the 300BO and hogs. The 300 was not designed for this and is woefully inadequate for serious hog control.
Yeah, I know you can kill pigs with a .22 but those are prefect shot opportunities. The ugly truth is you only get those perfect shots about 5 percent of the time. Even with a good shot, some pigs just refuse to give up and run until they expire.
If you want 308, you gotta go with the AR10 platform and then carry that brick around. If you want to stay with the AR15 platform, there are some good alternative calibers. If you don't reload: An upper in 7.62x39 works well and cheap ammo is surprisingly accurate when shot from an AR platform. You can also get factory ammo in 6.5 Grendel, 458 Socom or 6.8.
If you do reload: The 6.5 Grendel works well but I have no personal experience with them so can't give honest opinion. The 458 Socom is very deadly at under 150 yards and if you buy your barrel and bolt from Tromix, it will run like a sewing machine. My personal choice in AR15 platform after trying dozens of combinations is the 6.8x43 (SPC II) and lots of folks use a 30 cal can on these. I have had really good luck with AR Performance barrels in 6.8. There are some good bullet choices for hogs including 95gr TTSX and 120gr SSTs. I have used both of these and had great luck with each. I primarily use the 120gr SSTs now since they cost about 1/2 as much as the 95gr TTSX. We have taken 276 pigs with the 6.8 and counting...39 were with the 95gr TTSX, the rest with 120gr SSTs.

This^ I have a .308 AR, it IS a brick, and the NV scope does not help Would I trade for it, not a chance, I love this rifle

Agree with Vern1's statements. I have been doing hog eradication hunting for a couple of corn farmers for the last 4 years. I run a 6.8 and it has worked extremely well. I have not used a Grendel but know it is a capable round, just takes a longer barrel than the 6.8 to get the same performance.

Thanks for the feedback. Of course i am running super sonic ammo. I can usually place a neck shot on the first pig in the sounder, but harder to do on follow up shots when the sounder is running. This is where the 300blk falls short for me. I will take a look at the 6.8. Thanks for the advice...

Is it a killing problem or getting on target after the first shot problem?
Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.

Is it a killing problem or getting on target after the first shot problem? Sounds like a getting on target problem. We run the 6.8 and the 300 blackout side by side doing eradication in the farm country. They both kill pigs deader than dead. I run 110 grain Barnes TAC-TX in the 300 blk and like I said before have had ZERO issues with performance on pigs. Take a lot of body shots on pigs 200 + lbs UP TO 200 yrds (most shots 50-150) and they have been deadly. I have yet to not see a pass through with those bullets, nice wound channels too. I have no experience with the Grendel.

I have 308 and 6.8 spc ii. The 6.8 is my go to gun for the field. A lot lighter than the 308. I've had one miss hit on a hog with 6.8. Missed the ear hole and ricocheted off the brow. Was using Hornaday and changes to SSA. Haven't had one bounce off yet.

Go with the 6.8. It will fit the AR15 platform and will flatten pigs as well as any thing I have ever used.

I've killed a LOT of pigs with my Blackout. If you're shooting at pigs running, pigs in brush, pigs at long distances, a 6.8 or 308 will improve your kill ratio.
If you're shooting at pigs under a feeder and the Blackout isn't killing them, I don't think a bigger/faster bullet will help much.
BTY: I agree with Skinnerback; Barnes 110 is the bomb in a Blackout.

Weekend before last hunted a property new to me. Land owner had a 300 blk as well, and bought the cheap off the shelf Remington ammo. Said I'm not using expensive ammo on pigs. Shooting supersonic with a suppressor/thermal optics. My son carried that gun, lined up on a 200 lb sow at 80 yrds. He took a quartering away shot, entry wound just behind the last rib. Exited through the front of the shoulder opposite side after hitting the heart. Went 30 yrds and nose dived. I honestly had my doubts about an exit wound with the cheaper ammo. Was a feed lot pig with lots of fat on her. I was impressed with the results of that "cheap" ammo in the 300.
