I'm about to load up some 270 WSM loads for testing...gonna load 140 AB over H1000. For those of you who've used the 140AB, how far from the lands have you found the sweet spot? I'm thinking .05 off is probably a good starting point?

That bullet is not that depth sensitive from my experience. No more than I shoot the 270WSM and the way mine shoots the factory loads with that bullet I have not bothered reloading for it.

.050" is fine. Work at max or just beyond max, and it will shoot the best.

The WSM cases do NOT like to be reduced.

Keep it near max loads. When you reduce the loads less than max, I couldn't get them to shoot well.

I shoot the 140 AB under 65 gr. RL-22. This load shoots better than I can hold and leaves most everything it hits dead in the road.

Found some RL 17 today too that I might try alongside the H1000. Anyone have any load data for the RL17? I can't find any published data anywhere for RL17 with 140gr bullets in the 270wsm.

I'd stay away from the R17. It is a double base powder, and is REALLY temp sensitive, much more so than your IMR 4350 loads.

Well it sucks to hear that. I thought RL17 was supposed to be more temp stable than RL22 which I was initially gonna try alongside H1000. Is H1000 temp sensative? I wasn't as concerned with max velocity for my berger loads but for the 140ABs I want to get as much velocity as I can get out of them.

I've found the winchester WSM brass I got is very thick and hard. As a result I had problems with necks splitting after shooting them the first time.

What caliber whiptail (which WSM round)? With the aggressive WSM case that has a short and fat powder column and 65-70 grains pf powder getting pushed through, the necks can get work hardened very quick. So annealing the cases would be needed. The smaller the opening, the quicker the work hardening.

Sorry for getting in on the conversation late, but I concur with Chad's comment about Accubonds. The faster you push them, the more accurate they get.

Thanks guys. The powders I have to try are IMR 4350, H4831, H1000, Retumbo, RL22, and RL17. What are your thoughts on what to try first with the 140 AB? I also have a lot of Barnes TSXs.

Any thoughts on which powder to try first if I don't have a lot of time to develop a good load? The list of what i have is above...

H1000 will work. Just use a drop tube to help compact the powder. I'd also seat the bullet out a little further than max to help reduce the compressed load.

Keep it near max loads. When you reduce the loads less than max, I couldn't get them to shoot well. Try the reduced loads for 130 grain bullets listed in the Speer book, utilizing AA5744. The 130 grain 270 bullet at 2100 fps is much like a 125 grain 30-30 load, very pleasant to shoot and quite accurate. I was getting .35 to .5 inch five-shot groups at 100 yards with that load. Winchester 1885 in 270WSM, barrel reduced to 24".
