After many years of hunting I had my first Bad experience with another Hunter / Near miss. I was hunting yesterday at an MLD ranch and we went out for possible exotics (cull animals), before the opening of MLD whitetail today. I was with the ranch owner on spot and stalk. Another group was together with an "experienced hunted" in a large blind and three inexperienced with him. Long story short... we were hunting over 400 acres... Those in the large blind decided to take a 280 Yard shot or more on a gemsbok through the bush ( in my view grossly irresponsible for the animal, or others) , and that bullet landed about 60 yards in front of me..... I saw it hit, when we heard the shot.
Needless to say, I packed up my things, and left and did not stay for the rest of the hunt.
One thing is for sure, I will absolutely Never again hunt with people I do not know well, even if with ranch owner and " experienced" guides should they have others with them.
I count my blessings.... Stay safe out there.... take care and God Bless

Small HF tract like that, things are gonna happen. They should be especially careful. Hope the owner gets the point behind your leaving.

280 yards is a chip shot for some.

Besides that a 400acre high fence isn't much of a hunt, more like animals trapped in a cage with nowhere to go.

For Dog Down, its not the 280 yards, its the 280 yards in the type of country..... Basic rule of gun safety... know whats your target lane and what is beyond it.... On the 400 high fence, I agree..... I nearly always only hunt the 2000 acres of free range in front... We were sent in to remove a damaged mangled gemsbok and another oryx.... specifically....
Point Im making is simple... know who your hunting with and where.... Shared my experience to heighten awareness not get poked at for hunting in a high fence or being criticized

know the feeling... 99% of people on HF have never meet... i get laughed at made fun of just cause of me english... Yet when huntsolo on WMA safety is always first... 3-5 rounds in AR, it is just a . 223 & cheap 55gr ammo... Wear orange cause usualy walken in thick stuff, & limit my shots ta close range even when in more open terrian...

Your the dude walking around in the brush 300 yards from a stand with 3 inexperienced hunters.. sounds like you didn't know your surroundings or where u were. Why in the world would you be so close to them. Maybe they did see you and got pissed for ruining their hunt and gave u a warning shot.

If you knew they were in a blind on a 400 acre hf, why were you out walking around? Why not let them have their hunt? Did you coordinate with them to let them know you'd be out walking around and the area you'd be in? Sounds like both parties may have been in the wrong.

Sounds like the land owner was trying to put as much $ in his pocket as he could get away with.

You shouldn't have been walking around that close to where they were hunting and they shouldn't have taken a shot they weren't capable of making.

The OP is not at fault, nor is the other group of hunters. It's all on the land owner, or outfitter, or maybe the guide.

I'm not going to be as 'mean' as some of the previous posters, but yea, probably not a good idea to be walking the woods with other hunters on stand. At least nobody got hurt. (Unless it was at the camp house after!)
Thank you...thank you very much

But if I knew others were going to be hunting in a ground blind on 400 acres I don't think I would spot and stalk. I think I would have asked a lot of questions and would have went and sat in a stand.

The Landowner and guides were in charge, both of the ground hunt and the blinds positions....

The ground blind the inexperienced were in was set up for a 60 yard chip shot to a feeder. The stand is used for wounded warriors, and children to take first animals.... They had one experienced hunter guide with them... ... just as a point of reference.
But as pointed out, and my lesson learned, never happen again.....
I should say Ive hunted that ranch (usually the 2000 low fence) for three years and have found the host guide to be reputable and without fault in the past.... this case different.
I believe I made the right move, I left.... Ranch owner said he took full responsibility... end of story.

If he was the one leading you then he is absolutely responsible, he should've coordinated with the other party. Still don't understand spot and stalk on 400 acre knowing there is another party out hunting

Besides that a 400acre high fence isn't much of a hunt, more like animals trapped in a cage with nowhere to go. What the heck does that have to do with the safety issue at hand. 400 acres HF or LF, safety is job one. I had a guy stop and decide to stop and target shoot in the middle of the woods on a 3000 acre LF. Come to find out he was shooting in my direction. Acre size and fence height has nothing to do with carelessness. I have hunted many small LF 50-100 acre places with other hunters and done so safely. Be careful out there guys

Amen Simple Searcher.... my point in sharing the story was to remind everyone... and share my experience so that others might not have it happen to them.
And to 68A, Yes the owner was guiding me and I was taking step for step behind him... he was the lead ... like a formal PH on a hunt spot and stalk...
I won't make the mistake again.... Im taking this lesson and reconsidering each blind location and spot on our regular lease (low fence 500 acres in medina, hill country).... I want to know where the neighbors blinds are more now... each position.... I know our shooting lanes are spotless safe... we are shooting down at the ground to 100 yards typically not more... but thoughts are wondering to errant shots from other surrounding places that I may cannot see.... funny how having a bullet explode like that in front of you has an effect quite like that.... rethink it all.
again I shared my experience not to be poked at... I shared it so that it might not happen to someone else

If you really want to cringe, just think about all the small properties (5-50 acres) in the hill country that are chock full of blinds & feeders. It's a miracle there aren't several accidents here each year. I have a neighbor 2 properties over that has a shooting range and we constantly hear bullets richochet and whiz across the sky. It can be some pretty scary stuff at times.

400 acre HF spot and stalk hunt? with the owner? other hunters on the ranch? Come on dude, this has disaster written all over it. Have some common sense, your as much to blame for putting yourself in that situation as the idiots where shooting in your (unknown to them) direction. Bad deal that could have senselessly ended tragically.
How come everybody I meet is a deer hunting expert?

I did, said I wouldn't do it again and shared... I already took responsibility, I don't need someone who was not there to blame me.
