Awesome work Jerry. I've noticed different Bowie profiles. What's the story there?

Marc, Bowies comes in all types and shapes and length. It is not a bowie until it is at least 6 inches long. 14 inch blade and above it is a hunting sword. My personal preference is the Southwest Bowie, however I make both old patterns and my own modifications there of. when I was younger I preferred a 9 1/2' to 10" blade. Now I prefer an 11 inch blade. I need that bit of extra umph that it can give me. They have the world cutting contest. When I set them up originally the fastest time for cutting a 2x4 in half with a 10 inch bowie is 2.8 seconds. You had to be 10 seconds or faster to even be in the running. I used to have a lot of fun with those. I had to make sure the cuts could be made before I asked them to do it at the contests. So I got in a lot of practice and I always used a Southwest style bowie. I've taken hogs with them, I have carried them into jungles, high deserts etc., they work anywhere.
To me I think this mother of Pearl bowie is a little light in the britches. In modern days it would be referred to as a fighter style bowie.

Jerry, were you at the contest at Jantz a couple of weeks ago? I went and watched for awhile. You guys are WAY out of my league.

Thanks for the kind words guys. Dave, no, I have been getting ready for our show here at the house. We hold a knife rodeo here for the collectors. We show them how to make each cut then lead them through cutting it and have them compete for a trophy to take home and one trophy with their name on it goes on my shop wall.
It is amazing how much a person will learn about cutting by entering one of these contests. I have had masters that has held their stamps for years said they learned more in one year of competing than in 10 years at their own shops. A proper done up bowie should chop at least 30 2x4's before losing part of its shaving edge.

Jerry, I was impressed by them hacking through the 2 by 4 and some other stuff and then splitting a straw. You guys have some tough metal.

On pistols, MOP is not recommended for shooting. They are considered dress grips. How does pearl hold up on a bowie?

Well, they are right for a New Orleans Ho House. Actually one of the most stable of all of the handle materials...AS LONG as you cap it off on the end. It would break if dropped and no cap on it. It will not shrink or swell unlike ivory on occasions if not taken care of. The only draw back with Pearl is it is slicker than owl snot. One of the old tricks used by sales in the 1800's even until the middle of the 1900's was to keep your pearl showing colors and brightness was by rubbing it on your nose then put it in the sales case. The oils really brought out the sheen. I would not chop on a 2x4 with one but I would like a one inch limb and lighter so, not over medium work in my opinion. Now, saying that I think ever civilized man should have a pearl handled knife. The one I have is on a folding knife made in the late 1800's. I carry it for my "church" knife. The only thing that separates us from the lower animals is our ability to accessorize.

I liked the movie "Patton" as much as the next guy but GEE it really turned everyone off on pearl. I think Tom Three Persons had a pearl handled Colt. Great looking material. There is an outfit in Culpepper, VA that sells smaller slabs that would work on a folder or bird knife. Somewhere in the back of my mind is a need to wear a really good dust mask if you are grinding pearl- I think I'm right on that-been a while. And-I met you at a knife show a few years back. I can't think of anyone better- super good knives.

Dave, good to hear from you again. Yes, you do need to wear a mask when grinding the pearl due to it getting the calcium in your lungs. Long sleeves to as enough of it will get into your skin and enough of that will cause sores. Used to be a maker down in south Texas had sores on his arms and legs from that. Years ago we were always told that grinding pearl was toxic, naw, the shell is just calcium but like anything like that your body can only stand so much of it before it reacts.
Gotta watch grinding that micarta and G10 more. That stuff be bad for you.

The whole thing is impressive, but I have to admit the most intriguing part to me is that giant set of pearl. Real hard to find pearl that big and that clean.
